I grabbed the Tau Empire 5th edition FAQ off the GW site, and was confused by the tau drone query:

Q. If a unit with advanced stabilization systems also has Marker Drones, can the drones remain stationary to fire their markerlights while the Battlesuits move using their advanced stabilization systems?

A. No, since models in the unit moved, the drones, which do not have a stabilization system, may not fire a heavy weapon.

I was under the impression (reading my 5th ed book) that jump infantry models with jet packs (i.e. battlesuits and any drones that accompany them) get the relentless special rule, which allows moving models to fire rapid fire and heavy weapons as if stationary... so why this ruling?

Edit: Okay, I missed the A.S.S. part (hrm... I don't think they were really looking to acronyms when making that up), and realize that primarily the systems go with broadsides, which are infantry, not jump jet infantry... and I doubt anyone is crazy enough to put the system on a normal battlesuit, so the question is kinda moot

Drones are 'type' as the unit they are with.

Broadsides (who have Advanced Stabilization systems) do not have jetpacks and therefore are not relentless (and neither are their drones).

Drones in Stealth or Crisis units do have the relentless ability.

yakface's 40K rule #1: Although the rules allow you to use modeling to your advantage, how badly do you need to win your toy soldier games?
yakface's 40K rule #2: Friends don't let friends start a MEQ army.
yakface's 40K rule #3: Codex does not ALWAYS trump the rulebook, so please don't say that!

You know, realizing this... I guess I shouldn't give my friend such a hard time about using pathfinders with rail rifles in his sniper drone squads--they count as bloody infantry anyway, and so long as he remembers to remove them, it works out just as well (in fact better, thematically... what army would mount sniper rifles on unstable hovering platforms?).

Thanks for the clarification, Yak; I'd already caught my error, but restating that markerlights are viable with stealth suits doesn't hurt.
