After listening to one of the podcasts here about GW discontinuing their black primer, it occurred to me that I didn't know if the white primer I have is actually just spraypaint.

Is the Citadel Skull White a primer?
And what would you recommend for a good black primer these days?

Citadel Skull White spray is just spray, not primer.

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity......

For the record, I find Armory spray is best summed up as "You get what you pay for." Neither my black, white or matte varnish are that good, with the black being the best of the bunch. Still I'd rather pay $4 more for Citadel over the $6 for Armory. Or better yet, I'd like to find a krylon or rustoleum can that I like, but haven't been willing to experiment in that direction yet.

And seriously, GeeDub getting out of the overcosted primer business? We shall see.

I'll second that, Selestine. Armory FTW! I've also used Krylon Gray with very good results. Only problem is finding a low-humidity environment in Florida to prime my minis. I always get pills and strings :(

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

I find a lot of people suggesting Armour, but I just cannot get behind that product. GW applies better, period. It is a better product. With Armoury, my prime loses more detil, and the sealer puts a haze onto every model I spray. Whch would be fine if that was the effect I was going for. I have found Floquil sprays to be the best I have ever used, however be prepared to pay for the privilege of using it. It also takes a different approach to use; much higher solids content means much less in the way of spraying is needed for coverage. You can spray too much on a model in a flippin' HURRY. VERY short bursts.

My big gripe is with GW sealer. That stuff does the job, but I can only get a couple of uses out of the can before it gums up on me. EVERY can! I clean the nozzle after every use (invert and spray), but they still shut up on me. About to lose my mind.

As far as priming, I've taken to putting either white or black through my airgun and spraying my mdels. I was worried about not having a "proper" primer coat causing me repair work/repaints down the road, but so far there has been no bother so long as I've used a good sealant. I'm still looking around for a good acrylic primer I can put through my airgun, suggestions welcome.

I don't know.. I've never had any trouble at all with the armory primers. Maybe it's because I live somewhere with next to no humidity? Who knows.

Anyway, I've also heard great things about Krylon, but Armory definitely does the trick for me ^_^

I use either the expensive Army Painter line or the cheaper but just as good Dupli-color line.

I haven't used Armory or GW primers in a long time.

I've assumed that my new $10 can of Citadel Skull White is primer. I've used it on the last 10 models, and it's very toothy to simply be paint. Then again, there is no writing on the can that calls it primer. (very disturbing) Overall, I am pleased with the product.

(edit) Also my $.02 on Armory--I used spray black primer on some Eldar a few years back and got good results. However, it was too grainy for my tastes.

As far as acrylic primers go, any of you remember "Smelly primer" from GW? That stuff was good... Wonsder why they discontinued it.
