In 5th edition, I know that if a psyker joins a squad and uses a power that counts as a weapon, such as Doombolt, then the psyker must target the same enemy unit as the rest of the squad he joined, meaning the squad he joined can't shoot at one enemy unit and the psyker shoot at a different enemy unit.

What about powers that don't count as a weapon, like the Lash of Submission? Can a sorceror use that power on an enemy unit and the squad he is with shoot at a different unit?

It doesn't matter whether the power counts as a weapon, but whether it counts as a "psychic shooting attack" as described in the 5th edition rulebook.

Unfortunately unlike many of the other FAQs GW just put out, the CSM one doesn't explicitly list which powers count as a shooting attack.

My own personal rule of thumb is that if the power is used in the shooting phase instead of firing another weapon then it falls under the heading of a psychic shooting attack.

But until GW makes an official statement about Lash we can't know for sure.

I do know that in our INAT FAQ we ruled that it was a shooting attack and we will do so again when our revised FAQ is released.
