Let's just see how long some of us have been around. Most of us will have gaps, I played in college, started again later, started again after returning from Japan, started again recently in Beijing (though i was painting and modeling during the 3 years off).

I started 40k in 1994, and with two breaks (one in 1997 to 1999 because I hated the 2nd Edition HeroHammer, one from 2004-2007 as I worked on and then saw destroyed my Lost and the Damned Army) have been playing since then.

I played my first GW game, Blood Bowl, in the summer/fall of 1989. The ball kept rolling from there, to WHFB, WHFRP, 40K, Epic, Necro, SH, MoW, etc, etc, through the years.

I took a break from GW in 2000 to pursue games that I felt were better than GW's offerings, but recently returned this year mainly due to the new edition of 40K, and the fact that I now live and work right next to two GW stores as of April.

Having fun with GW again.

Started D&D in 1980 and read WD from then. Played a few of GW's early boxed games. Dabbled with TTWG with WFB 2nd edition 85 - 89 ish and picked up RT, but never really got round to playing a game. Dropped everything after college as all my gaming friends moved away and could afford to have real hobbies now I'd started work.

Took up wargaming again in 2001 with LotR, as the arrival of kids meant I could no longer afford the time to have real hobbies, and I needed to do something with my time that didn't take me out the house too often.

I still play LotR (mainly with my two boys now) but also have expanded to Epic and BFG, and I mainly play other games such as AT-43, Warmachine, CAotR etc., etc. although there's a small chance I might pick up the new 5th ed starter set in the autumn...

I'm a youngin', I admit.

The year was 2006, Bush was in the office, the economy was in recession, and the world was on pins and needles due to 'war' in the middle-east. It was a different time, it was... uh...

... err... ok well I guess it wasn't different.

In my defense, had the employees of GW (particularly the one in the Springfield Mall, Springfield Virginia) been as persuasive in 1992 as they seem to be now (read: seemingly BRAINWASH kids) I would have been playing Marines for nigh-on 16 years now. Which means I might even have a fully painted army of Marines by now...

So.. maybe it's a good thing I waited until I knew better...

2004. My brother played back in the early 90's, but I didn't like the models back then (too statue-like and blocky, cartoony poses, etc) so I didn't get into it.

They opened up a GW near my house in 2003, and my friend and I checked it out and wow, the models were a lot better.

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

Just after 2nd Ed 40K got going, but I did get Tyranid Attack a bit before that - that was actually my first GW game that I bought. Took a break just after Codex: Sisters of Battle came out, mostly because I didn't have enough time for school and 40K. Came back when the second 3rd Ed Chaos Codex (ie. the only real Chaos Codex in the past decade) came out, played through 'til 4th. Gave up on 4th pretty much straight away. Our group wrote our own (better) ruleset that's been in development and testing for longer than 4th Ed was even on shelves, and we haven't looked back since.

I did play a bit of Epic even before that (we were very young, we didn't know the rules, we had a box of Epic Marines and a box of Epic Orks).

I've played Battle Tech since the late-eighties. The FLGS I played at also had a few GW mini's and games, esp a Blood Bowl boxed set. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford it then. Fast forward 15 years, I've moved and grown up and GW put a store in the local mall. The rest was history.

1995 -- I turned 11 and, with the help of a couple friends giving me $5 each, bought the Warhammer Fantasy 4th Edition box. The rampaging commenced, but really got heated when 5th came out and my lizards came to power.

1999 -- With 40k freshly into 3rd edition I gave in to sci-fi and bought that box too. Blood Angels would become my first round-baser army, and were only just sold this year

started playing games with the original bloodbowl I think that was somewhere around 1987.. We used cardboard pics of the bloodbowl players back then..

I still have the multi-colored plastic models from back then too

stumbled through almost every fantasy army until about 1999.

Started working for GW in 1999 as a part time staff in the VA area and started 40k.(yep staff must have any army for each game system. nope, you cannot use the stores.. ) I started off with a sisters of battle army. It's still one of my favorite armies to play. along with my black dragons and word bearers..

stopped working for GW in 2006 (we don't need no stinking part time employees.. lol)

took a 2 year break until just recently when the new orks were released.. (drooooool)

have played bloodbowl, necromunda, mordheim, space hulk, bloodbowl, BFG, LoTR, Talisman, did I say bloodbowl already? Fantasy and 40k.

I played a lot of RPGs and Battletech in the 80's and received a few copies of WD for my birthday in 1989. I became obsessed with the articles - trying to figure out how to play these British games I had never heard of before. I saved up some money and as soon as Rogue Trader hit my LGS, I snapped it up. It's all been downhill since then.

I started with Talisman back in the day... the original with the Chainsaw guy and all the others, won the local convention's tournament 3 years in a row before visiting the miniatures battles room and seeing a great layout between Blood Angles and Eldar complete with titans and superheavies. I had played battletech a few times, but this stuff was completely different and so much cooler. It wasn't until after highschool that a buddy of mine really got me playing 40K though, probably around 94-95.

My first EVER GW game was around 88 or 89 when one of the "Old timer" gamers talked out group into playing a game of Talisman (I think thre were 3 or 4 supplements included in that game, as well).
Thought it was a blast.

A short while later, I got lured into a game of Space Hulk at the same store (different "Old Timer).
Fell in love with it and ended up buying a used set of Space Hulk & Genestealer (I think that was the name) supplement from someone.

I was always fascinated by BloodBowl and, around 89 or 90, I broks down and bought it and Dungeonbowl.
Oh, how I loved that Astrogranite Blood Bowl board!
Dungeonbowl was a VERY interesting game, as I recall, too.

Sold the BB game some years ago.

Wish now that I hadn't.
I'd love to teach my 10 year old how to play... but I'm picky and I will ONLY buy a Blood Bowl set if it includes astrogranite (So, if you have one... hint hint).

In about 2001, I started 40K CASUALLY.
In about 2004, I began putting a more focused interest in it.

Early 1987. I picked up some Citadel minis for D&D and was "forced" to try Warhammer Fantasy Battle by the store owner. My group never played it much, instead we played lots of 40k when it came out a few months later (we got some of the first copies sent to the US).

I too started with Talisman (still have it with all the supplements other than the dungeon) back in 87 or 88 I think. A friend of mine later introduced me to 40k around 89 or 90 and got me painting. It wasn't till much later though that I inhereted the beginnings of my eldar army from my best friend and really started my own army. Before that it was mostly playing with other people's minatures and the few that i had myself, but back in those days, the games were smaller due to all the crazy rules you had to deal with.

Still have my copy of the Rogue Trader rule book...and some pamphlets advertising "Brand new 2nd edtion 40k, comming soon!"

I started with Fantasy in 1995 when myself and two friends got sucked in by the models. I played Orcs and Goblins, while they covered Dark elves, wood elves, Chaos Dwarves (I miss those ugly little blighters) and later Lizardmen upon their release.

Around 1997 I fell in love with Gorkamorka, and a summer long campaign at the Fair City Mall GW store got the sci-fi hooks firmly planted. That inevitably led to an Ork army back when greenskins were a comedy army in every sense of the word. Add in the obligatory 3-4 year break for college. The new Ork 'dex dropped about the same time I quit playing that filthy WoW, and since then I've been steadily rebuilding my Waaagh that traces it's roots back to "The Skid"
