Well I was playing games like heroquest and battlemasters a while before I started playing 40K. I actually got my first mini's (the old BA captain and a blister of 3 marines with Terminator Honours plus some blood red paint) shipped from the UK after getting my hands on a GW catalog.
That Christmas I got the 2nd Ed 40K box set and played that with a few friends. I didn't really get heavily into 40K until I got the 3rd ed box and found a FLGS to play at. Got out about a year into 4th and now I'm starting to get back in....

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity......

When did 3rd edition come out? Was it 98 or 99?

Started playing right when 40K2 came out. So that would have been late 1993. Have played through to 4th, but took a break a while back that seems to have stretched into about three years where I just had the occasional BFG game.

Now with the promise of a shiny new edition the many-tentacled beast that is Warhammer 40,000 is once agin pulling me into it's gaping maw.

I go back to college in 1987-1988, when GW made board games like Talisman and Dark Future.

I took a little break, came back during 40k 2nd Edition, and proceeded to buy way too much stuff during the 90s.

Started in 89 with 40K with Space Wolves. I just liked their color scheme back then. Played a good bit of 1st edition; played a whole lot of 2nd edition. When 3rd came out in 98, I quit until early 2001. Got into playing again pretty heavy in 3rd and 4th edition. Now, there's 5th and I've got another army for a new edition.

I also played a lot of Epic Scale 2nd edition (the one with all the formation cards-a lot like what Apocolypse formations seem to look like...) Played Fantasy in 95 and 96, but couldn't get into it. Played a little Blood Bowl and Necromunda. However, 40k has been my miniature hobby through and through.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

My first games was Space Hulk when I was about 7, used to play a lot with my dad. That would be about 91-92. Though I was painting the figures before then.

Heh heh. You said, "MERP".

I'd forgotten all about that game...thought the critical tables were the best until I discovered WHFRP. Those tables put the MERP ones to shame.

1988 here... used to go to Sentry Box West all the time to buy various D&D minis, and one day my wife and I spotted the 2nd ed. Blood Bowl box set. After a month or two of saving up, we purchased it and the rest was history...

History, of course, including Adeptus Titanicus, Space Marine, Man O' War, 40K (from Rogue Trader on), WHFB (from 3rd ed. on... anyone else remember the Warhammer Armies book that had every army in it?), Epic 40,000, Battlefleet Gothic, Space Fleet (? one of their starter games, had a lot of extra rules in the WD), Necromunda, Warmaster, etc...

Along with a passel of other TTGs and RPGs...

Started playing in '87 with Rogue Trader.
Also played Space Hulk (v1.0), Dark Future, Adeptus Titanicus, and Judge Dredd (rpg).

Had a break from 92-95 (got sick of certain tournament players and didn't have a club to go to), but I've been playing since 95 with no appreciable break (apart from due to injury - when I was laid up after knee surgery).

I remember that I went to the GW store during a trip to Toronto in 92 or 93, I don't recall which, and thought it looked really cool. Looking back on it, they must have been making the transition to 2nd ed because the store terrain looked really "Rogue Traderish". I saw the 2nd ed box set at a chain book store and asked for it, and have been hooked ever since. I took a break from about oh, 2003 or so up until a year or two ago, but I'm playing more now than I have since the first couple of years played.

Battletech startedmy obsession with toy soldiers back in the late eighties when I was just a little squirt.

Started 40K right before 2nd edition boxed set came out, played until I went to college where i spent all my time drinking beer, playing rugby and chasing girls, then came back after I graduated when I saw Dawn of War,

On a break now while I am traveling, but still obsessed with toy soldiers.

My first GW was WHFBv1 back in the early/mid '80's. I seem to recall v2 was out very shortly after that first game (or at least we found out about it: This is all pre-interwebs time and info about things like when a game is coming out was a lot harder to find!). We moved pretty quickly to v2 and we played the heck out of that. Played 40kRT as soon as my FLGS got the RT rules and a couple of blisters of "star soldiers", Eldar, and Orks in. My best friend bought out all the Eldar, and I went with the Orks To this day, he has his huge old RT-era Eldar army, and I have my similarly large RT-era Ork army. Pity they mostly catch dust these days.

The rest, I guess, is history.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

3rd ed, after the second Chaos book and Tau and Necrons were out. Heroquest and other sorts of things before that.

Oh, man, I'm not sure. I started either in 1993 or '94 with Man O' War, and quickly added Space Marine (2nd edition) and Warhammer Quest to my collection. I had a ton of money back then because I got into Magic the Gathering at the beginning and then sold a lot of the valuable cards. I still miss my Power Nine(s), but I can really regret all of the good times I had playing MoW and SM2/TL. I tried 40K (2nd edition) back then, but didn't really like it.

When Epic 40K (3rd edition, sans Squats) was released, I quit "The Hobby" for some years. I finally got back in around 2000 with WHFB 6th edition.

EDIT: Whoa! It's been a while since I've posted here. I completely forgot about that "Slann In Space" avatar!

WHFB and 40k in 1990 first year of high school.
Favoritism waxed and waned between the 2 games but the last 4-5 years WHFB has been miles ahead in gaming fun.

Best period of gaming though was in the first year of 3rd ed. Simple rules. A core group of us at the games club with huge armies and fun, fun, fun...

I picked up HeroQuest back in the mid 90's, and played maybe 4-5 times for want of other people. At the time, I found the look of the other games distasteful. Blanche art has never appealed to me "Space orks!" seemed really silly. Oh the foolishness of youth!

Just a year and change ago (late 2006 or so) I picked up Dawn of War on a whim in a GameStop and really fell in love with the fluff. I picked up some Marines and a few units of Sisters for my then fiance, then promptly shelved the marines and painted a metric f*ck tonne of girls after reading their Codex and deciding they were the best unhinged nuns with guns in space EVAR!

I originally started going to the gaming store from about 2005 to 2006 with the Star Wars Miniatures game, by Wizards of the Coast. There were always a lot of people at the store playing 40k, so I decided to start playing it during the summer of '06 and I've been playing ever since.

First GW game I played was Talisman and we played that one religiously (bah, broken Monk!).

Got RT in 88 and first game we played was my marines vs my friends orks. He used proxies as we didn't have access to the ork minis. His army consisted of 20 ork champions in power armour and shuriken catapults. Catapults kicked ass in RT.

I lost my first game of 40k.

I couldn't wait for official army lists after that...

I started with pencil and paper warhammer in 93, then started buying up an eldar army in '94. I remember when I started my FLGS had just sold of out their old "Crate o' marines" which was something like 40 beaky marines on bare sprue for 40$, so I bought 5 metal guardians and a HWP instead.

However, I have only learned to paint to any acceptable fashion in the last 2 years or so.
