Not sure if this is the best section of the forums, but whatever...

Yak's post on reserves got me thinking, I'd like to see a collection of all the "did you notice" things people came up with from the new 5th Edition.

I noticed that Gets Hot is much softer on Rapid-Fire now. No longer 2 or less if you shoot twice. Haven't seen mention of that yet.

Anybody else?

Of course they are. The nerfing changed the Assault Cannon from a no-brainer to just a choice. Now they actually have to think before choosing.

One I noticed but also heard elsewhere is that there is no more "Last Man Standing" rule. Another change is that I did not see a rule that lets you "turn off" special close combat weapons, so no nerfing your powerfist attacks in an attempt to hide in close combat during your opponent's turn.

Great, maybe now I can take shield drones on lone battlesuits without having to worry about this... oh wait, the new wounding rules.

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).

I noticed that if you're in Area Terrain and shoot through more than 2" of it to your target, the target gets a cover save.

I noticed that on page 223 the photo has been edited to make it appear that there is a second chaos space marine squad when it is actually just the same one.

A model armed with a power fist no longer gains a bonus for having another CCW unless the other weapon in also a pfist.

I couldn't find that either. Guess you can shoot at whatever you can see now.

Yeah, this is nothing new for GW. They pretty commonly photoshop multiple units to fill out a picture.

FNP no longer matters against AP 1 or 2. My butt puckered when my DC got hit by a plasma cannon. 5th has made me go from using Mephiston in 4th to Dante in 5th. Things that are now great are fearless troops, Melta weapons, and anything that allows for prefferred enemy is brutal. Skimmers are weaksauce and Heavy armor is the way to go now.

Anyone notice that you are going to have a hard time screening troops with other troops? Even if you are in base to base contact, I can offset my guys to see between the models (not bases, models) so that I can "true line of sight" the target behind. Sure, they will get a 4+ cover save, but if the target already has an invuln save, or is a troop on an objective, the shot is probably worth it.

'Units that still have models in base contact with a vehicle in its Assault phase may attack it again, just as in a normal ongoing combat (including all models that would count as engaged in a normal assault).' Pg 63

So you can kinda be locked in assault with a tank if neither one of you move away. Weird. And obscured doesn't downgrade a pen to a glance anymore, but makes the hit go away if you make a cover save.

I never understood this. It says they "may" attack again. Why wouldn't you move an inch away, assault back an inch, and get your +1A?

Because they are talking about your opponents assault phase.

In 4th you would charge, fail to destroy a vehicle, and even if it didn't go anywhere you got no attacks in your opponents half of the game turn unless the vehicle had a weapons kill.

In 5th you can assault a vehicle, and if you only stun it so it can't move, or if your opponent doesn't move it, you get to swing in his assault phase as well.

Once you got back to your turn, assuming you failed through 2 assault phases already, you could, and probably should do as you suggested.

Hope that helped.

Yes it id. So used to not being able to assault a vehicle in the opponent's phase, I didn't even think of it.

There's also no mention of any negative leadership for being under half squad size.

there are plenty of minor rule changes from 4th to 5th and like in 4th your gonna end up running into plenty of them. I knew some people who up until 3 months ago who didnt realize some things.

In the description of mission types, there's a blurb about "Seizing the Initative." If you are taking the second round for turns in a game, after deployment but before the first player begins his turn you may roll a d6. On a result of 6, you get to go first instead! I like that; it nerfs the 'first-turn-hammer' where 1/3 of your army is wiped out by the player having the first round.

Also, players deploy their entire forces, minus reserves, now instead of alternating choices. Definetly speeds up game play and gives player two a tactical advantage to further mitigate 'first-turn-hammer.'

Also, Perils of the Warp does not allow Armor saves, and forces you to REROLL successful Inv. Saves. Wicked (unless you're Eldrad; I hate that guy!)

I know, it is much safer for him and much more dangerous for everyone else! Even if you pass your invul save, you have to reroll it. But if Eldrad fails, he just rerolls that! Grrr!

You cannot reroll a reroll, sorry. Besides, the Farseers have ghosthelms that protect the farseer from perils on a 3+, and you do not have to reroll that one.

That is not really true. Page 3 of the book says that models now MUST be on the base they come with. So skimmers now much be modeled on thier flying bases. And since 5th Ed uses true line of sight, most units will be able to see and shoot under them. But the unit being shot at will most likely get a cover save.

To be honest I can't find anything about hitting skimmers in close combat - I found "fast" vehicles moving flat out, and I found skimmers aren't immobilized if they move only 6", but I didn't find anything that makes skimmers harder to hit in close combat. Is this true? Is hitting a skimmer just as easy/hard as any other tank, and dependent only on how far it moves?

Also, if an eldar vehicle moves only 6" in its movement phase, then moves 12" from star engines in the shooting phase, how do assaults against it work? The book has a chart that's based entirely on the "style" of movement it used in its last turn - combat, cruising, or flat out. It moved at "combat speed", and then used Star Engines later. So is it hittable on a 4+?

The chart references the distance the speed the vehicle moved in its last turn, not just the Movement phase. So I would say that a vehicle that moved more than 12" in total would count as having moved 'Flat Out'...

Have you seen the bases that skimers come on (specifically the height of the stems on those bases)? Most have at least one stem that is so short even a model that is modeled as kneeling (thinking the kneeling Fire Warrior here) would have trouble seeing under it. You can certainly model skimmers low enough to the ground that it would be hard to see under them unless there is an extreme angle, and most are tall enough to block line of sight.

I understand that this is normally the case, but let's examine the mechanics of this situation.

Eldrad Ulthan casts Fortune on himself, giving him a rerollable 3+ Inv save. He rolls 1, 1, and 6. Discard the 6, and now Fortune has been casts but forces a PotW test. Now, one of two things will happen. Eldrad rolls a 3+, so he saves vs. PotW. However, due to the 5e rule, he must reroll the result. If he saves again no big deal. If he fails this test, would Fortune not provide him with a reroll?

Let's say he fails the initial test. Well, Fortune let's him reroll the result. If he succeeds on this check, PotW would force an additional roll as ALL successful Inv. saves vs. it must be rerolled.

I understand that up until this point every 'reroll' power has stated that you must accept the reroll result 'regardless if the result is better or worse than the initial result.' However, this case seems to be featuring two distinct elements that force rerolls. IMO you would make all three checks in this case. It is highly unusual (read: broken) as not many models have a rerollable invul save (read: Eldar are severly overpowered ).
