So, having played my first game of 40k5 (and being pretty impressed btw), my opponent and I were discussing our best units.

For me, it was my SoB Retributors - 10 strong with a vet and 4x Heavy Bolters (combined with divine guidance as needed) = lots of shooty death!

For my oppo, it was his Land Raider Crusader - you just can't kill the damn thing! (Hell, I didn't even scratch the paintwork - 6 turns without any damage...)

What have your best performers been so far?

While you sleep, they'll be waiting...

Have you thought about the Axis of Evil pension scheme?

I thought about trying wraithguard as a troop choice, but that is 350 points even before taking the warlock into consideration. Furthermore, the models are pricey.

Scarab swarms. Whilst they don't have the best stats my 10 base swarms regularly earn 2-3x their own points cost. Also, I like it when an opponent wonders whether to shoot the Monlith ot Scarabs with a railgun, highly ammusing

Hurr! Ogryn Bone 'Ead!

Through all my games it's probably my 5 'man' Ogryn unit.

First game they absorbed some fire and clubbed some scouts that were on an objective. Nothing spectacular. Just a good fight in an otherwise miserable failure of a mission.

But in my second game, they rolled up on this Vindicator when I was finally tired of taking a good shelling (I play an artillery list, I don't GET shelled, dambit). I had put SO much firepower into this one Vindicator for 4 turns. At least 3 Demolisher rounds, 6 Lascannon rounds, and 5 Heavy Mortar rounds, the few times I managed to hit it, it makes a cover save! I've never seen anything make so many cover saves. I swear to you, no exaggeration, it made every single 4+ save it was required to make. And the times I actually manage a glance or a pen (twice, the whole game) I stun it. And it had Daemonic possession (can't tell you how much I hate Vindicators that can't be stunned) so it just didn't care.

So the lads pile out of their truck, get into a ruin with big solid walls that can't be shot through, and run into its face, their wonderful Str 6 attacks plunking against the piddly rear armor. Really made a big difference in that game.

The then proceeded to cut Huron Blackheart to shreds. UMF!

Zerkers are amazing now thanks to run. Combined with F-Charge, WS 5, and a PF, they're one of the best assault infantry I've seen so far.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Played my 1st game of 5th this weekend. Plague marines are awesome. The real star was the land raider. Ate rail gun fire the whole game and only lost its lascannons. Delivered its payload of termies and lord onto one objective so they could kill the fire warriors holding it. Then it rolled on top of another to contest it. Then it was immobilised. They just couldn't kill it, even with rail guns. Land raiders are gonna be worth their points, now.

Executing Exarch

Los Angeles

So far, mine has been my dark reapers, particularly the exarch. 2 shots with the tempest launcher at S4 (with rerolls to wound) that are AP3 and ignore cover and don't require line of sight is almost too good. The rest of the unit is rocking as well, but it's hard to match the troop killing power of the exarch.

They have won be so many games now. You have to kill them all to stop them from scoring, and then I get them all back - and scoring again! One game they were replaced 7 times in 6 turns (they died top of turn one, I went second), and then claimed a winning objective.

All of my space wolf infantry.

Usually I use two squads of Grey Hunters and a squad of Blood Claws, which forms the bulk of my force. Run is a godsend for my blood claws, and with grey hunters holding objectives, not much is there to stop them, with the new wounding rules small arms fire has become a lot more potent, and true grit still keeps them strong in CC, with the new CC rules my powerfists always get to strike. That and counter-charge now owns, +1 attack when I get charged!! My Venerable dreadnought owns too, last two games I’ve played, it was shaken twice and lost its assault cannon once.

Shake this square world and blast off for kicksville.

This. This is why I'm gonna have a squad of 10 kroot + 2 krootoxen in a devilfish. Have them join charges with a 20-man flanking unit and you've got yourself a pain train. They could also sit comfortably inside while the krootoxen poops all over the cabin.

What? Guh! I had no idea they were so fierce... Ignore LOS?

Anyway, for me it's got to be Heralds of Khorne on Chariots with Icons. Cheap troop killing power.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

@Model Collector, Your 114 attacks will yield you about 3 dead plague marines on average. The plague marines will beat your squad in h2h on average the turn you charge and will do even better against you in the following combat rounds if you do not run away.

Moral, keep those kroot away from the plague marines and let your suits kill them with plasma.
