Not much to say really. This is mostly just a conglomeration of the units I think made it out the best in V5 mashed together. The only thing I think the army doesn't have enough of is close combat. I considered dropping the pathfinders and a squad of guardians for another squad of scorps solve this, but I decided it was better to have the scoring units and extra big-stuff protection. I have high hopes for the warwalkers. They seem like they'll really shine what with the new cover save rules (both in that they get one and they don't care if you have one) and fortune. I left out the once ubiquitous spirit stones from the prisms because, lets face it, the prisms don't care too much if they can't move for a turn --at least they don't 10 points care. The guardians where a hard choice to include, but without using up any heavy support choices or using wave serpents, guardians are basically the only long ranged anti-tank available to let the prims shoot at troops like they want to.

I've only played two games of V.5, so many of my assumptions may be off, but that doesn't mean go easy me.

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism." -Hermann Goering (high ranking Nazi)

You can add an exarch with bladestorm and shimershields to help fix some of that cc problem in the list, why anyone would not take an exarch in DA is beyond me =/. Just one squad with defend would make a terminator squad kind of a joke against you but anyway.

The problem I have with exarchs is the vulnerability of squad contrasted with the how obvious of a target they are. As far as I'm concerned, if DAs are in close combat, I've done something wrong. Even if the exarch has pw/shimmershild/defend, the unit still performs best at range and still gets smacked around in combat by a competent combat unit-- they just cost more. Especially because the usual rational for cc exarchs in DAs is so that they can "tarpit"(an unreliable tactic at best with a non-fearless unit) a unit while counter charge get in position. Scorps and the Avater are not capable of that kind of tactic because of their slow speed. If they can counter charge, they can do it regardless of how the dire avengers are doing.

AND, this is all completely separate from the fact that DAs aren't that hard to kill at range, especially with the growing popularity of anti-horde weapons.

Oh, and as for termies, fire prisms have them on lockdown without any help.

Anything else? I would really appreciate some constructive, non-one-liner comments.

¨You can add an exarch with bladestorm and shimershields to help fix some of that cc problem in the list, why anyone would not take an exarch in DA is beyond me =/. Just one squad with defend would make a terminator squad kind of a joke against you but anyway. ¨

I have to disagree, DA´s without an exarch are a great choice. for the points they put out a ton of firepower and you can have more units as opposed to one expensive unit that dies just as easily. in this type of list you want consistant firepower, the bladestorm is best in a mech list. here, you want them walking forward behind the gaurdians (i asuume) shooting every turn.

I agree with cypher, the shimmershield isnt worth it, the save doesnt make the DA´s any good at CC. and when was the last time you saw termies doing anything but back pedaling and shooting dub ass cannons? in v5, you may not even see them at all with only one ass can.

i think this is a solid list, my few suggestion are to jack up one gaurdian squad to 20, add a warlock with conceal and use them to screen the other infantry. that way you can fortune them with eldrad and make them really resiliant. your units shooting through them wont care about the cover save they grant the enemy in most cases as they are rof units, not low ap units.

second, thing about harlis instead of scorpians for countercharge, they hit so much hardr and in most cases cant be targeted by the enemy.

lastly, why the pathfinders? they dont mesh well with the list and the increase in 4+ cover realy limits their effctiveness. i would say try and throw in another squad of DA´s

i think this list would be very effctive, apart from the fire prisms needing to move forward to stay close to eldrad, unless you plan on just leaving them in cover.

@Reecius, I did not know you had an Eldar army. I thought you only had the Space Marine Apaches

The brightlance in a Guardian squad has a bad taste; it hits or misses. And with 5+ rounds to go, it might not do much.

Why do you have Bright Lances when you have Fire Prisms?

Why do you have Guardians when you have Dire Avengers (and vice versa)?

Why do you have Scorpions, the worst of the CC units the Eldar have?

What does the single Pathfinder unit do?

Why run Eldrad and the Avatar just to keep 30 guardians and a unit of War Walkers happy?

Thanks for the advice Reecius.

The path finders were a last minute decision. They seem to be really good in the new edition: 2+ cover, better snipers, outflank, scoring; but you're right, they don't fit in the list. I'm going to drop them to boost a guardian squad to 20 and get them a warlock. I like that idea.

What I'm not convinced on is the harlies. They seem to have gotten significantly worse. I'm mainly concerned with the new everybody-piles-in-before-combat rule combined with new rending. Not to mention the obvious rapid fire perils of footslogging. Aditionally, for the same points as the scorps, I'd only be able to get 8 harlies. I'd rather have a fortune-able brick with this army than an precision assault unit. On the contrary to harlies, scorpions get the awesome outflank abilty and their bane (powerfists) are now much worse off --in most cases only getting two attacks, while their own fist can easily take the loss of an attack in stride due to more attacks and higher WS. Scorpions can't deal with the super elite combat units of 40k, but anything short of rending or power weapon squads they can usually handle.

I'm very curious as to how you'll defend harlequins' viability in this situation.

I haven't actually used this list yet, but I envision Eldrad doing one of two things depending on the opponent. Either he chills back with the warwalkers and prisms and just spends the entire game fortuning and guideing, or he advances up with the shuriken catapult totting portion of the army fortuning the Avatar and then using the other powers as per the situation.

@wuestenfux: I've gone over the single shot guardian platforms many times before. Lets just say I like them and it works for me.

@Stelek: Why not be constructive?

I have bright lances because fire prisms vastly prefer to shoot at infantry, so not relying on them for anti tank allows them to do so.

I don't understand you second point. Why are dire avengers and guardians exclusive from each other?

In this role, scorpions do well. Both harlies and banshees are too fragile for counter assault.

The pathfinder unit was a poor choice. I got rid of it.

I'm running the Eldravatar for far far more reasons than that. I'm not even going to bother going into more depth(as you obviously didn't bother either).

If you would like to support your claims instead of just insulting me, I'd love to discuss things with you.

@Cypher, I run a footslogging Eldar list with Eldrad+Avatar too. I like the fact that you are running 6 troop squads but I think you could trim it to 4 troops and still be fine. I would lose a guardian squad and the scouts and add in another close combat squad. I like scorps too, but I dont think you need to take the infiltrate upgrade on the exarch. In this list, the scorps operate best as a counter assault unit so you will want to keep them behind your firing line. For me, the other close combat squad would be harlies, yes they are weaker but they are also your most versatile choice.

I know you want to keep the DA's cheap but please consider bladestorm, it really does pay for itself.
If you can squeeze the points, get a warlock with embolden in one of you guardian squads, thay way you can put Eldrad in the squad and he can reroll his psyker tests when he rolls those damn "double ones"

I been doing some playtesting for my Eldar army.

If you run Guardians, they should should have scatter laser platforms. BS3 and bright lances don't go to well together. 50% to hit and then you still have to roll to penetrate and then roll for damage.

I find Exach and Bladestorm are worth it for dire avengers but I run mine in a wave serpent so they just mount up to move somewhere else if I used bladestorm. Might be different on foot.

Pathfinders seem great in theory but with all the cover saves they might not be worth it.

...with 15 points left. If I drop shadowstrike, drop the lances down to EMLs, and drop 3 guardians I can fit a squad of 3 jetbikes with a shuriken cannon. But I'm not sure if I like that. I like to have a squad of bikes in the list, particularly for deployment zone objectives. I'm most hesitant about droping shadowstrike for two reasons. One: I don't want them to be useless when I don't need them for counter assault (Tau, Guard, SAFHAs). Two: When they will be used as counter assault (most of the time), it really helps to have the expanded deployment zone, even if I don't push as far forward as possible. This is especially true with 70+ models on foot.

Another option is to drop the bright lances to EMLs and take a bladestorm dire avenger exarch. While I know I've expressed dislike for them, they're just not something I put standard on by DA squads, but if the points work out easily they can be ok. The thing I don't like about doing this though is that this leaves one squad as the obvious target and I don't feel like I'll use bladestorm too often. As someone said earlier, foot armies aren't as much about concentration of firepower, as much as overall volume of firepower. This makes bladestorm a generally poor choice. It's still useful if I know I'm going to die/charge/or be charged soon, but beyond that, it usefulness is severely limited.

I agree, Darrian13, I should have one more combat unit in this army, but I just don't know what to drop.

As for the Guardian platforms: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/209695.page
