In 4th I had my guard army on square bases to represent close order drill and because it made the guard cooler looking standing shoulder to shoulder (not to mention great template bait). For 5th edition the book states my troops have to be on the base they were given to in the package.

My question is: would any of you have a problem with my guard army standing shoulder to shoulder with the square bases ?

Comparing tournament records is another form of e-peen measuring.

Not if I'm playing my Guard.

I have loads of guys armed with MLs, so you can imagine the attraction...

I'm sure someone would complain at a tournament.

Personally I think it's cool you put them on square bases to represent the close order drill.

My only question is, what am I supposed to do with my Ork Deff Dreads that didn't come with a base, even when I bought them new!

Ironically, anyone who would complain is surely more of a square than your bases.

You've got my vote. Original and in character.

I really should be spending my time more constructively.

You should really go for it and go all out with fantasy movement trays.

No, I wouldn't have a problem with it, unless you're finding some way to exploit the rules with a square base that I haven't thought of.

oh you know I have exploited the rules to make it easier for my opponents to kill more guard with blast weapons and flamers.

I wouldn't mind, but isn't the Guard codex being redone in the foreseeable future, sans doctrines?

I'd keep them on circular bases and just make a movement tray for them that keeps the round bases in contact with each other. Fewer arguments that way.

Why would you say that? I can't imagine anyone ever caring unless he acts like a giant ass and someone is trying to get him back by complaining.

Otherwise if he briefly explains that he based his models that way for close order drill, who would care? It doesn't give him any real advantage in the game.
