Personal vent on
Is it just me or are others getting tired of comic book movies? I'm sitting in Dark Knight watching previews thinking "man they've really gone off the deep end." I was counting at least two more comic/comicesque movies coming, one of which made me laugh at the supposed bad guy. After being unimpressed with Hulk, Iron Man (really cheesed the whole soundtrack wasn't Black Sabbath), and let down after all the hype about Dark Knight, I really I'm really really burned out on the comic book movies. It also made me realize the only movie I've really liked this year has been Cloverfield. I seriously need a good comedy or something deep.

I'd like to see some comic movies that didn't follow the formula. I agree it's tiring watching the same old formula with a different set of powers and personality quirks over and over. I liked Iron Man and Hulk though, and I loved Dark Knight (I payed no attention to the hype and I was expecting it to be terrible, so I was blown away)
I'm looking forward to Hellboy though.
My advice would be get the kids and go see Wall-E, it's brilliant and very funny.

I enjoyed Ironman (and you couldn't really play the Sabbath song more than once or else it'd be too cheesy), Batman, Spiderman, and the X-Men movies. The thing is, only the really popular superhero comics should be used and I think it was a risky thing doing Ironman but they pulled it off cuz Tony Stark as a womanizer was just too fun.
However, there's stuff like the Hulk and Hellboy which aren't as popular (and also sucked) and now they're bringing out the Watchmen or whatever the hell they're called? Ugh. I haven't watched the latest Superman yet but from my experience only the popular comics or comics whose characters can be made flashy and awesome (Ironman) are any good. I can't think of any more comics aside from those that've already been done, but Hollywood has surprised me before.
Wall-E is a great movie. It shows a very real future, both on Earth and on the space ship.

Yes, to some extent I wish they would stop while they are ahead. It was nice when they were the exception to the rule, but now studios are trying to make money off of every property they can adapt to cannibalize a fan base and not have to develop any new concepts.
To me, there have been a handful of good ones and a big steaming pile of crap.
It's kind of worth it, though to get those gems like X-Men 2, Spiderman II, both Hellboys, and (hopefully) the watchmen. These have become some of my very favorite movies, and I doubt they would have been made if the genre hadn't exploded like it did.
That being said, I am tired of:
A. Origin stories. You know what was aweomse about movies from the 80s like Indian Jones (or even Star Wars)? They started out in the middle of the ass-kicking and filled in the backstory in later films. I wish we could get a superhero movie along the same lines, cuz I'm really freaking tired of every first movie having to be an origin move.
B. Comic book movies made by people who have obviously never read a comic. C'mon, Ghost Rider? Catwoman? Who makes this stuff?

I like superhero movies. It is true regarding 'origin stories'. But I think that is Marvel, too. I think they are doing that on purpose, and I think they appeal more to kids that way.
I thought the first new Batman was a little too like that (Do we need close ups of Batarangs? Honestly) but they are meant for kids, too. Just like Jack Sparrow movies, which are bereft of singing talking animals.
I personally haven't seen all of them. I haven't seen the original Hulk or the Fantastic 4. I know Fantastic 4 is going on to be on T.V. a few years from now and it is going to totally make my day.

At least there is some kind of supporting fanbase for the comic movies. It's a bit scary to think of what hollywood will begin feeding on for ideas once it's burnt up all the comic properties it can get it's mitts on.

I for one cannot wait for the Watchmen movie. Batman was great because of how dark it was. Joker made the whole movie. Hulk and Iron man were okay but Hellboy was better than both. The older Batman movies are absolutley horrible so I agree with you there but the newer versions are really good.

Your lack of knowledge disgusts me.
In all seriousness I think there it wouldn't hurt to slow things down a bit. While I enjoyed the comic translations I've seen this year overall the only one I will be buying on DVD/BluRay will be the Dark Knight. The best movie after Dark Knight so far has been Wall-E I'd say.
I also really didn't like Hancock at all, and it wasn't even a comic book originally.

I believe we have Watchmen (sorry the intro to me looked like it was a spoof); Wolverine; that Dark Horse comics one (City or spinner or whatever); Green Hornet(?). Thats a lot and doesn't include Ironman IV or whatever.
Counting Hancock thats four already this year?

This goes to show you are a movie fan and not a comic book fan. Only the popular heroes? Popular does not = good. Usually popular just means appeals to the lowest common denominator. If you disagree watch a few episodes of Friends and then we'll talk.
Watchmen is an awesome book which is about BEING a hero and the toll that can take, on both a person and society. Written by the same person who wrote V for Vendetta, an amazing movie as well as a book which was never "flashy" or massively popular. Lets not forget the awesome that was Sin City. A little more popular perhaps, but if nothing else is anti-flashy.
Out of the 3 X-Men movies only 2 was any good, Spawn is possibly one of the most popular and flashiest heros out there with his massive cape and such, and yet that movie sucked.
If we stuck to only popular heroes then 300 would never have been made.
Comics are finally being tapped to tell interesting stories on a screen, not just another reason to toss up "splosions"....

Respectfully, I think that is indeed the purpose for most. Although improving over earlier movies its a special effects delivery vehicle, akin to a sci fi movie. Indeed, if this fades I'd proffer you'll see a resurgence of boom boom spaceship sci fi.

Oh I know.... Which is sad, when you consider Heath Ledger as the best thing comic related on screen, possibly ever, and he had a small bit of prosthetics and makeup.
But yeah, Im sure we can expect more of the OSCAR LEVEL FILMS like Day After Tomorrow, Independence Day, and Armageddon.

Yeah I'm more of a movie fan. And while popular != good all the time, some things capture the attention of lots of people while others fall by the wayside and I think it's a good filter for quality. I've watched "Friends" and I can tell you why people enjoyed it: the nearly see-through shirts that Jennifer Aniston always wore. I enjoyed that show for the same reason many straight males did.
I enjoyed V for Vendetta and 300. Haven't watched Sin City. Of course not everything good becomes popular, but I give popularity more credit than most forums do. (I've noticed that anti-popularity is a sentiment I mostly find in forums cuz I have no prob talking to most people about pop culture in real life so I'm going by experience.) Maybe Watchmen is good. Haven't read it. I'll watch it if the reviews are good. However, so far it looks like it's a bunch of no-name heroes in a movie. The message and theme might be cool but when I watch a superhero movie I would at least like to have heard of 'em. I think the theme of "the toll of being a hero to the person and society" is well covered by the new Batman films too.
But yeah, you hit the nail: I'm a movie fan, not a comic book fan. I do love explosions though. Transformers was awesome because of Megan Fox and explosions.

In a way, it is. The driving premise behind Watchmen is the fluidity of human nature; that our perspective is fundamentally tied to our capacity to effect change in our environment. Because of this most of the characters are meant to appear as satirical juxtapositions in order to highlight impossibility of the traditional "hero" persona.

Buh? The entire idea behind Sin City is style over substance. It's certainly a good movie, but it is flashy. Flashy is all it is, and all it was meant to be.

This is the thing. If you're going to limit your film going experience to blockbusters then you're going to see a lot of films that are very similar. For the last couple of years it's been superhero movies. Before that we had a pile of disaster movies. I'm not sure what'll be next but I know that there will be two or three good ones and a pile of also rans and sequels.
Alternatively, you can get out there and watch the pile of excellent movies released every year without a big marketing budget.

We should, but it will take on a different context. Reading Watchmen now, we see it relating to a time and state of mind that we once had. It's a different experience. It's something you can expect someone to intuit if they're picking up a trade that was originally released in the 80s, but walking into a cinema to watch a film made this year... not so much.
It'll be interesting to see how they handle this. Much of the anti-Thatcher stuff was stripped away from Moore's other political work, V for Vendetta (apparently, I haven't read it) and that was kept relevant.

Cold War is over? Maybe it is (looks at expansionist China / Russia, and Russia's recent statement about using Cuba as a bomber base with resulting counterthreats by the US military)maybe it just took a break...

Absolutely. Because there's no repetition or cliche in Bollywood movies at all!
***Mama Mia = Bollywood musical?
***Movie goer myself. I think I've read four comics in my lifetime, two when I was in elementary school (Dr. Strange pwons all you wussies FYI). Watchman looks meh to moi.
***Yes I liked Cloverfield for what it was, a modest budget horror movie that was produced better than its budget.
***And yes Transformers is all about BOOM BOOM (Ryan) and explosions. And Optimus kicking butt old school.
***I think what annoyed me about Dark Knight was that a reviewer I like said it was better than Silence of the Lambs and Seven. My expectations were extremely high and it annoyed me the movie wasn't up to that. Acting was great. Many scenes were great. Mayhaps it got too twisty to me or unbelievable (chase and Dent/chick after-er yea the guy who doesn't plan got that convoluted...) The hospital boom was really cool and a perfect moment however.

Yeah, the Cold War is over. The policies of the Comintern have been abandoned. That Putin's new Russia is nationalistic isn't the same thing.
There are moods and ideas that were the product of the Cold War that just don't exist today. The idea that the bomb really might drop tomorrow.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
