Hey all,

Taking a slight break from my Ultramarines, I want to show you my other project that I had started but put on the shelf momentarily. I am in the process of building a true scale marine force based off, inspired by and stolen from guys like Synapse, Doghouse and Sheep (mainly found on Warseer). I have used them for inspiration and taken what they have done a tried to boil it down into something simple which I felt like I could handle and reproduce well (I hope!)

So I give you the first 6 marines in my new and hopefully forth coming army, which I am still trying to decide if I should go with a GW established chapter or to do a DIY chapter. I have also recently thought about taking Pedro Kantor as an HQ choice, load up on Sternguard veterans and treat the army as a form of Deathwatch...but alas I have to wait for the new book to be released.

Anywho, unto the pictures, but please remember these guys are still very much WIP's, and still need to be blinged out a bit with Purity seals, grenades and other such things.

First three:

Next 2 (I forgot to take a picture of the sixth marine, but trust me he's here)

A scale shot with my Tanith wannabe IG Sgt:

And finally a scale comparison with a normally built GW marine (with marine number six appearing in this film =D)

Again, these guys are just WIP's, so in the end the bolters will be drilled out and they will have shoulder pads representative on what ever chapter I decide on, or get help from you the community as to what chapter I should do.

Thanks for looking and any thoughts, critiques and criticisms are more than welcome,

Thanks,
Chappy P!

Oh, here and there.

Wow, that's really cool! Seems hard though if you plan to do the whole army like this.

@Mekboy: Thanks for the response! I tried using normal arms, but with everything else bigger, they look like little chicken wings (hmmmmm...Chicken wings *drools*)

@Hallucination: They actually are not too difficult to build, once you got the hang of it. With the proper tools and a bit of patience, they actually fly by really fast...my only current hurtle is heavy weapons, which I think will need to be custom made.

I might base the heavy weapons off from the last edition's concept sketches of being backpack mounted over the shoulder fired weapons, but we'll see.

If enough people are interested I can do a quite tutorial on how they were made. I really don't mind sharing my secrets.

Thanks,

Please do share!

I'd love to start a True-Scale Marines Malevolent army, if it (True-Scaling, not painting lots of yellow!) is easy enough.

Though, in a TLOS world, maybe True-Scale Marines aren't the way to go?

@Aduro: Thanks for the complement! I plan on cutting the power cables off the arms to make them more in line to a "normal marines" arms.

@Alpharius: When I get back tonight from working with my youth group, I'll post a very basic tutorial, which should help anyone who wants to, or dares too =D, try true scaling. It's actually really easy. or me the hardest part is getting the various parts I need.

Thanks,

Ok, time to do a quick tutorial...

The first thing I did was clean a pair of terminator legs by filing off any mold lines. Next, I prepared a small batch of green stuff, which I used to fill in the legs.

To do this well I picked up a set of these bad boys:

They are called clay shapers and they make working with Green stuff a breeze for the most part. I put a small ball of GS on the lower leg and used the clay shaper to fill in the gap and make the leg a solid piece, then I did the upper leg. Now a key for me was to do one leg at a time and let it dry completely before doing the other leg. This will ensure that you don't leave finger prints all over the place.

The legs should look like this:

Then this:

Once the legs are set, then I move onto the torso. I use the back piece of a normal marine torso and I glue to that a cut down terminator chest piece.

1st I cut the area in red on the back piece down as shown here:

Then I place a small ball of GS in the green circle here:

this is mainly to help keep the pieces in place while the polystyrene glue dries.

Then I pull out the clay shapers again to fill in the gap which is seen here:

so it looks like this:

Finally I glue the torso to the legs as shown here:

as you can see there is a gap, which I fill with a small ball of GS and use the shapers once again to make it look like this:

This may seem like a lot of steps, but it's not really and each step gets easier as you go along and get used to the process.

Once the abdomen cavity is filled and smoothed, then it's time for the arms.

I didn't do shot for shot with the arm, but essentially I did the following steps.

1. I cut the storm bolter off the arm. I wasn't neat about it, with the exception that I saved the Storm bolter boxed clip for later use. Hey it's great for future sternguard vet conversions!

2. I cut the power cables off the arms.

3. I cut the thing below the wrist off and filed it smooth.

4. I cut the arm just below the shoulder and turned the arm toward the chest. Then I re-glued the arm into place.

that's it for the right arm, the left arm is nothing more than the storm shield are from the Close Combat terminator sprue with a normal left handed marine hand glue to the tip of the terminator arm.

Then, I add a normal marine back pack, because I like the sense of scale the tiny back pack adds to the models. I then add the head, then I will add purity seals, grenades, bolt pistol holsters and other such items to bulk them out a bit more and add some spice to them.

The only thing as I stated above that I am unsure of doing at this point is heavy weapons, which I will most likely have to convert.

I hope this helps, if anyone has questions, comments, critiques whatever, please let me know!

Thanks,
Chappy P!

The overall effect is great. I think GW would do well to pay attention. The models just look more powerful, more robust. The normal SM models just look like jerks next to them. And SM models normally look pretty beefy.

It looks like a lot of work, your GS work is a bit rough in spots, but the overall effect, the proportion and scale of the models, I think is really great.

It'd require a full reconsideration of virtually all the SM models to do (ie. Landspeeders, Bikes, not just infantry), but I hope GW takes note.

@Ibushi: I like Salamanders, and I tried to do them in the past but it just didn't do it for me, maybe the new dex will change that. I'd love to try and upscale a marine tank, but I wouldn't know where to start as it is, a normal dread is too small as seen here:

I thought about doing an Inquisition based force with the following color scheme, but I am still unsure:

Basically a knock off of the death watch. Again if in the new codex Pedro Kantor allows Sternguard veterans count as scoring, then I just may do a "count as" deathwatch style army...only time will tell.

@Groz: Thanks, I was hoping the tutorial would be ok, it is the first time I have given what I would consider a "proper" tutorial.

Thanks,
Chappy P!

As far as a Chapter goes, check out the Red Hunters and the Exorcists here (http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Red_Hunters) and here (http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Exorcists) for similar fluff and color schemes on existing Chapters.

@DBM: Yeah I have checked out those chapters in the past and I have thought about taking the best of those and deathwatch to form my own DIY chapter.

Currently I am waiting to see what the new codex holds in store for Marines. Like I had posted far above, if Pedro allows Sternguard to count as scoring, then I will most likely do a "Deathwatch" type army.

I think sternguard would be a great "count as" type of unit. A unit of marines who are armed with the best bolters and ammo for said bolters to help them counter any xeno's or daemon they may encounter.

I would also picture the chapter to be non-specific, meaning that they would not just focus on xenos or daemon or psycher but they would be prepared to battle all three...

anyway, I am still open to the idea of doing a normal codex chapter, but I waver. The other thing about the color scheme that I have chosen is that it would be simple and easy to do, which helps me stay focused on the particular army at hand.

Thanks,
Chappy P!

I totally hear you there. While the Exorcists are pretty anti-daemon specific, I don't think the Red Hunters have much of anything specialization. Plus their logo of a white skull with an Inq "I" in the middle of it would be a cinch to do and would work for all types. You could keep the color scheme you've developed, though, call them Red Hunters and have the nice generic Inq logo. If you're all set, though, I don't mean to pressure you.

Slowly, slowly. I updated my original P&M post and P&M blog yesterday with my progress. I wanted to take some photos today after printing off a nice blue gradient background on my color printer, by my wife has taken our daughter to the zoo along with our camera.

Hey, I've also started doing some "True Scale" Space Marines, with your permission, maybe I could post some pictures on your thread. My Marines are different to yours however, as I have used Space Marine standard armour, and not Terminator bits (for the main body) I have used Terminator Shoulder pads though.

Let me know.

I have seen alot of attempts at scaled SM's but your is one of the best executed. They don't looks gangly and goofy like 90% of the attempts I have seen they have the right SM bulk without looking like Power armored Ogrin. Very nice job, can't wait to see some painted up.

Pallantide, I was definitely kidding about making bigger tanks...it wouldn't really be worth it. But a dark green salamanders colour scheme could look good.

I really like your idea of doing a deathwatch army, that would potentially be very cool looking, just make sure to choose some kind of scheme that emphasizes all the work you did. When I sculpted my samurai banshees, I wanted to paint them black, but I realized that if I painted them black, you couldnt really tell that I had sculpted them myself...
Doing something that actually changes the scale of the marine probably isn't quite the same though.. just something to think about.

From the rumours, I heard sternguard would be scoring, but don't count on it...!

Keep the pictures coming!

Thanks for all the positive replies! I still waver with which chapter I should do, but I will think about it. I haven't been able to spend much time with these guys lately, but hopefully that'll change.

The next step will be cleaning various bits to add to them, then solidifying the left support arms, followed by actually gluing the arms to the bodies finally painting.

Again, I might wait for the new Codex to come out first before I make any final decisions about the army.

I'll keep everyone posted.

Hey everyone,

Sorry for the double post, but I have a small update for you guys!

and here is the scale shot with my True Scaled Marine:

If the consensus is positive, then I shall go on to make more of these guys, maybe enough for a squad or 2? Please let me know what you think! Your thoughts, comments and critiques are more than welcomed!
