Checked around after a fight against skulltaker. As far as I can tell, Nightbringer is not immune to instant death in all cases, just the one mentioned (wraithcannons). Is this correct?

his toughness is 8. how exactly could anything instant kill him? Anything else that instantly kills like rolling double 6 on the SAG, the crazy chaos stuff or psycic powers turning him into something else i wouldn't imagine his immune to.

After serving in a 'big gunz' regiment Grots often loose their hearing and have to resort to a rudimentary system of sign language. This is rarely successful as there are only so many signs a Grot can carry.

Hopping on the pain wagon

maybe a furious charging librarian or, as mentioned, skulltaker?

Yeah, skulltaker with his 'causes instant death if he wounds you with a rending hit.'

Skulltaker is incredible versus Wraithlords, too.

Yes I play necrons 1st off before I put my 2 cents in but it's a tough call. By the basic RAW you would be correct but I would still say it's jut 1 wound lost because in previous rule variants (Abaddon's demon sword, force weapons etc...) they could not instantly kill (if anyone remembers where this was written let me know, I don't believe it was addressed in a necron faq but in a question about instant death). It's also still a toss up because at the time the rules were written the wraithcannon was the only real threat out there for instant death. I'd personally play it as a 50/50 if a save is failed, roll a second D6 and on a 4+ only 1 wound is lost and anything less the wound is so severe it shatters the necrodermis and nightbringer explodes as if all wounds have been lost.

On another note though you know there will be rules change when the necrons get updated so whoever is playing necrons may just have to suck it up till the next codex.

But for like rolling double 6's on the SAG you remove the model from play. Seems pretty straight forward, whatever is under that blast is gone.

He isn't immune to insta death. End of story. Shooting him with Str D weapons in apoc and making him go bye-bye is just fun. Sucks for necrons that 5th ed. is so full of insta death weapons, but thats the way it is when you have a 3rd ed. codex. I'm sure C'tan will get eternal warrior in their new codex.

Don't forget about the Bliss Giver, although it'd be tough to wound him with it.

If you're not having fun, you're doing it wrong.

Also, straight from the FAQ for 5th ed Orcs.

Q. Are models that are immune to instant death
(such as those with eternal warrior) removed
from the table when hit by a Shokk Attack Gun
which rolls a “Raargh” result?
A. Yes, unless they are gargantuan creatures or
super-heavy vehicles (see the Apocalypse book).

I've killed the C'Tan with Typhus several times. Always wound on a 4+, Force Weapon, and *poof*...no more C'Tan!

It's a brave charge to send Typhus in at a C'tan though, since the Deceiver just misdirects and goes off and murders obliterators or something, while the NB will instant death you if he survives your attacks (with his high weapon skill and decent invulnerable save).

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

I laughed last Apoc game when we had a Deceiver and Jan'Zahr in a fight (He charged me to keep me from wiping a flank) The next turn a 10 inch pie plate of Str D scattered killing him and all the remaining Banshees. Jan just took the wound and laughed.

erm... why ID work on him??? from dex:Necrons wording its looks like a -
If a wraithcannon inflicts instant death on a C'Tan.....
it look like C'Tan don't die because of ID... not because wraithcannon rolled 6...

are writer, not reader

fluff wise the Wraithcannon opens a portal to the warp which the C'Tan have a particular weakness to (as evidenced by there war against the old ones) and IIRC ruleswise; they didnt cause Instant Death but instead removed the model from play

Force Weapons appeared in 3rd ed and they could instantly kill C'Tan but they dont have an exception when dealing with them meaning that C'Tan were not immune to ID.

Salamanders also existed at the time and they had Adanantium Mantle which prevented ID but that wording wasnt used with a C'Tan implying that they were not supposed to be immune to ID

As it stands its a poorly written FAQ answer and thats nothing new. Just look at the entry; if it states its immune to ID (with no criteria) then it is; but thats not the case in this instance.

C'tan are subject to instant death rules with an exception to wraith cannons.
