So I have a question about using a special character that is not from your main army.

for example I have an army of ultramarines, but I want to have captain shrike (ravenguard) lead the army (in order to get fleet rules)
Would I paint captain shrike in UM colors to lead it and play him as a proxy? or have him lead my ultras in ravenguard colors (not sure how that would work fluff wise)

Well as far as "Counts as" rules go you could paint him Ultras and just call him the Ultramarine Assault Captain Shrikemus or convert your own to be more Ultramarine and use Shrike's rules.

"Counts as" is the new black!

Basically, do as you like, know that if you have two Special Characters with special rules in your army you'll have to pick which one to use for the battle, and let your opponent know what's what and who's who.

The smurfed shrike should have his own name and be as captain BLUE .

That said, it may be easier to build a plastic captain with jumppack/LC and UM iconography for the "counts as" shrike.
The metal model is is not bad but has some balance disadvantages. :S

Finally a group photo of him and my Ultramarine death company...

Those are old pics as I've almost finished painting him. Just need to do the metallics, and find a company color for him, I've been thinking about putting him in the 8th like my "blood angels."

The death company are for my Ultramarines 8th company or Blood Angels.
