Subject: CC or shooty Boyz?

What would be better on an Ork Boyz squad, sluggas+choppas or shootas? Let's think...
Shootas are S4 AP6 Assault 2 18" range.
Sluggas are the same, but with 12" range and are pistols.
Boyz hit with a ranged attack on a 5+, but there are a lot of them.
Boyz hit MEQs in CC on a 4+ and wound on a 5+.
With a slugga+choppa, a Boy will have 3 base attacks, 4 on-the-charge, and strength 4 on the charge.
So... what's the way to go?

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

One of the considerations that have to be taken into account is are you running truck boyz or foot slogging boyz? Another thing is orks crappy I. Truck boyz are going to assualt 1 unit, take some casualties, then probably kill most of the unit off. They probably won't be good for another go after just 1 assault though. The good thing is truck boyz shouldn't ever take fearless wounds should they lose a round of CC. Truck boyz pretty much have to be sugga/choppas because they are one use units built for assault. Now footsloggers are a different story. You most likely won't get the 2nd turn charge of the trukk boyz, you should try for a turn 3 or 4 charge. This gives you 2 or more rounds where your boyz can shoot twice each, and your big shootas can go to work. With a 30 pack of boyz thats alot of shoots. By the time you charge something it should be weakened from the hail of dakka coming its way. Personally i don't run my footlsoggers very often, only during the Waaaaagh turn, and only if I have to. If you were to run slugga boyz on foot you would pretty much have to run them turn 1, get only 1-2 rounds of shooting with half the shots, and charge less damaged units then if you had run shootas. Since ork I is bad, each of the guys you lose before you get to fight back hurts even more, and you will lose more of them because the enemy is most likely in better shape than if it had taken 2 or more rounds of shoota fire.
I've found that orks are NOT an assault army that has suprisingly good shooting. They are a shooting army that assaults to finish the enemy off. This is certainly true of horde orks, and KoS isn't really any different. Ork bikers and buggies put out quit a bit of good shooting before the charge. (bad BS, but good strength and volume)
So in summary, sluggas for trukks, and shootas for horde.

There have been many debates about this and i have found that the maths supports slugga boyz but .1 or 0.2 of a killing rate. i personally find sluggas better and love the models but what ever your playing style is just use what ever compliments that

I field 3 squads of 30 shootas and 1-2 squads of 30 sluggas in a 2000 point list. If I field kommando's, I field 1 squad of sluggas.

Prefer shootas for the bigger footslogging mobs, sluggas is best for transported mobs. Either 20 in a battlewagon or 12 in a trukk.
Not sure how you managed to get the 0.1 or 0.2 diffrence in favor of the sluggas though. But if you statistically count it for just one round of shooting+assult for both mobs you are making a serious misstake.

I was thinking of footslogging it at first, because I'm on a low budget and Trukks cost like $60/70 AUD which is ridiculous.
Darrian's suggestion sounds ok. With the two AOBR boxes combined I'll have 40 Boyz, so should I got half-and-half?

AOBR contains slugga boyz, and nobs with the without pk. Not really any choice with how the simple version of the models are put together. (converting is an option of course). I would have ordered the box if weren't for the fact that the wargear modeled on the orks are useless as far as im concerned. I already have sluggas boyz for my trukk list, i don't like deffcoptas with rokkits, and the nobs in the box don't even have PK. The green tide apoc set is a decent deal though. 10 boxes of boyz and a warboss. (warboss has 'uge choppa, but not to hard put a real weapon on him.) I used it to make 3 units of 30 shoota boyz. The remaining box i put the burnas that were homeless from all the loota boxes i bought.
Orks aren't really budget friendly. Any good list is going to cost quite a bit, because the elite and point intense units are pricey, and the cheap models cost few points so you have to bring a lot. My advice is to build a list to slowly work towards. You will have a playable force at low points if you plan your purchases well.
Conversions are the budget ork players friend. If you can model something that looks about the same size as a trukk, there shouldn't be any problem with playing it as one.

Assaults are a dangerous place to be, IMO. I think that Shootas are the way to go for the most part with maybe one or two Slugga Mobz as a mix, especially if you use Kommando's either Snikrots or just the normal squads.

I run choppa/slugga in trukks (and occasionally in BW). Foot troops have shootas. Kommandos have choppas cause I run them with snikrot.
Trukks are what I generally consider a throw-away unit - one turn of assualt and if they do anything else in the game it's a bonus. Massed shootas on the other hand can kill pretty much anything you shoot at or hurt it enough that you can mop it up with an assualt (from trukkboyz - see above).

I've been runnning slugga boyz in Trukks, really easy to play, just charge up and assault.
Tried shoota boyz without much luck. I will be trying them again, but as foot sloggas as everyone suggested.
Frankly if you have crumy dice skills like I do, better off with overwhelming odds.
