ok, to start with im thinking about making a unit of RR's for my catatchen im starting, since i dont havethe dex yet im wondering what i would need for full rules on catatchen and IG.
also, if possible could someone post the RR's unit entry please, mainly need to know thier equiptment and possible upgrades so i can model them as WYIWYG.
my catatchen RR's will be riding the new coldones with a few small changes.
(please tell me this is a legal unit)

Posting the entire rules for the unit gets into the uncomfortable legal issue territory.
Without quoting rules verbatim I will tell you this;
Rough Riders are pretty standard unit size, so you'll need from 5 to 10 models. 2 models have the option for standard IG special weapons. The lances they get are optional, so they don't have to equipped with them. That said those lances are about all that makes this unit worth anything, as they give a bonus to S on the charge. You don't see very many IG players taking RR because well... they don't outright suck, but they kinda just aren't worth buying either.
someone must have the IG dex
If you're playing IG you should really have this yourself already...

sword, im thinking abou building a catatchen army, but not going to start unless it suits me 1st.
and rough riders are for fluff mainly, and looks.
its not often you see an IG riding about on a giant lizard
also, 1 note, if 2 are give say melta guns, can they still use thier lance? or does that get replaced as such?

Only troopers WITHOUT lances may take the special weapons.
Catachans on Cold Ones are a popular conversion and look cool too. I say popular but again, they are a popular conversion done to a unit you rarely see.
Long ago I started running a Straken's Devils army before it went away so I looked pretty hard at Rough Riders. It really depends on what you want them to do in the army. Aside from a charge they are not a good HtH unit because they are still just basic guardsmen. Even with the charge bonuses they just don't do that well. 2 or 3 units running around the flanks and hitting things with flamer throwers could be fun and would have great visual impact in your army.
A further note on converting: Catachan legs do not make good legs for riders. You'd have to do a lot of cutting and greenstuff work to make them look right. Maybe you can find some Tallarn rough rider bits for the legs, or look at various leg bits from the Fantasy lines and hit e-bay or something for the bits.

going with the theme im taking 2 squads, 1 for tank hunting (melta guns) and 1 for pyroness (new word ) that one will run about setting fire to anything.
and cutting and GS is not a prob, had plenty of practice at it by now.

As luck would have it, I not only use RRs, I also have them modelled on coldones.
Here are a few comments on their usage:
There are only 2 things they do that the rest of your army doesn't do better: Counter-Charge and Tank hunt. Don't use them for anything else.
As a counter charge unit, they all should have Lances and probably a laspistol. Without the lances they are garbage, with the lance they are one-hit wonders -but thats better than the standard IG no hit at all.
It is a +S, +I power weapon that will often devastate units of Terminators and similar.
For tank hunting I would prefer drop squads with meltas, but RRs can fill the role somewhat if you give them meltabombs. They can also take 2 melta guns, but its the bombs that are exceptional because they can be used at the end of a 19-24inch move-fleet-charge.
Recommended:
Cameoline if you want them to survive long enough to do anything. Don't assume you can hide them completely!
Alternatively they can take carapace armour without requiring your whole army to take it; not a bad option for a close combat unit.
Optional Equipment:
Frag grenade on veteran sergeant
Deployment:
Keep them in reserve, they can come on turn 2 or later and charge immediately 19-24 from your board edge -before being shot dead.

That's sounds like some very good advice. My biggest problem with rough riders is survivability during the first couple of turns. This should help. Honestly, if I didn't have my Tallarn rough riders painted up, I would consider switching to hellhounds.

closes to it will be a sentinel or 2.
thanks for the advice matt, ill deff. use the lances then, and a tank hunting squad will also be taken.
