Does anyone have a link to the best kind of magnets to use for magnetising minis? I'm thinking about just being able to swap dread weapons over, that sort of thing, although the more I think about it the more ideas I have

Is there a specific type that's better than others? Do you use two magnets per joint or one and a steel something? What's the best thing to use for the steel something?

Thanks all, sorry if this has already been covered at length elsewhere, I've not been here long.

i'd use a rare Neodymium rare earth magnet. for all the places i have looked for them, you have to order a certain quantity or value for the order. and they are dirt cheap either way.

as for magnetizing.....i'd personally use 2 magnets. you could use just 1 and it should work just fine. for heavier parts i'd probably still pin and use the magnets if possible to give it a little more strength and for alignment purposes.

Lots of different types. Use a disc magnet and make sure you get the polarity right.

The problem with using two magnets instead of one magnet and a piece of sheet metal/washer/nail/pin is that you have to make sure the polarity is correct on all swap-out items.

Which is seriously easy to take care of...use a marker, mark one side, done.

Honestly, polarity is the least of your issues when dealing with magnets. Your main concern with magnets is how you'll be digging the hole into the model to recess the magnet into it. Then you'll want to be sure that it's secure in the model. I have seen a number of times the glue bond break and magnets popping off models that are not secured into their holes. The best example is magnets that are glued onto the tops of flying bases for jetbikes. They are only glued along the bottom and are prone to coming off the base attached to the bottom of the jetbike.

Interesting story. The whole idea behind magnetizing a jetbike onto its base is to help prevent the flying base from breaking constantly (and ease of storage). I've magnetized Phoenix's jetbikes and some of his other skimmers. So he recently played a game and pulled out one of his flying bases. We've prevented it from breaking at the top via the magnet, so instead it breaks at the bottom where the shaft meets the base. Fixed one weak point and created another! You'll see my fix for this posted shortly.

Additionally, a friend of mine ordered from this place:

He found some great small disc magnets (1/8in x 1/32in) that would work great for arm mounts on terminators and the like.
