OK, Is the tank hunter skill now usefull against Monoliths ?

RAW wise I believe that Tank Hunter Skill is legal now since the recent revision of Necron FAQ, given that there is no longer a FAQ on this issue. Rules are referenced below:

In the Necron codex pg 21 the following are not allowed: "Attacks which count the targets Armour Value as being less than it really is (such as bright lances and blasters) do not do so...Similarily, weapons that get additional attack Armour Penetration dice...do not get the dice...".

Tank Hunters pg 76 reads: "They add +1 to their armour pentration roll whenever they hit a vehicle."

RAW wise the Tank Hunter skill neither adds dice nor reduces the Monolith's AV...no more so then a PF reduces the Monolith's AV. It is a bonus to the armour pentration roll not a subtraction to the monoliths AV as is the case of a bright lance which is prohibbited by the codex.

Necron FAQ covers tank hunters. They do not work against monoliths.

Your reasoning looks good to me.

Actually thehod, when they updated the Necron FAQ for 5th edition they removed the reference to tank hunters. So there no longer is a current Necron FAQ that pertains to the tank hunter USR skill. I have checked the current Necron FAQ on thier website 3 times and haven't found a reference to the Tank Hunter USR skill. The only FAQ even close is one that allows Power Fists, ect. to double their strength against Monoliths.

then i stay with the agreement.
it has no effect on the mono's armour directly it does not change it in any way, nor does it add a D3/6.
it simply adds to the roll.

It does work (RAW) until October when the Space Marine book is replaced. I can't think of any other armies that use this rule.

I think one of the units in orks has it . My guess is that it will reappear seeing as they took the trouble of putting it into the 5th edition rulebook...not to mention thier somewhat annoying tendency now to replace previous chapter/ race specific rules with USRs . Can't wait till they replace SW berserk charge with furious charge as the rumors propose .

The point of USRs is to make it easy to give a special power to a variety of units without having to reinvent the wheel slightly differently each time.

You can dress it up by saying that SMs have evolved tough, horny beaks or that elite Tyrannids have been equipped with hole-seeking missiles -- either way Tank Hunter = +1 to the penetration roll.

I am mistaken, yea it used to be in the 4th edition FAQ but the 5th edition FAQ does not have it.

well by RAW tank hunters > monolith.

Well it could be either way, it's still just +1 to vehicle armour penetration.

it does not work in 4rth edition tank hunters added +1 to the roll however in fifth it says it adds +1 to strength and the codex specifically say attack with augmented strength and a single d6

my 5th edition rule book says add 1 to the armor penetration roll, not the strength.

Yes Primarch, it is +1 to the armour penetration role. Monolith's prevent weapons from reducing its actual AV or adding extra dice to the armour penetration roll. The 4th edition Necron FAQ also prevented weapons from adding bonus modifiers to the armour penetration roll, like Tank Hunter USR. This language was removed in the 5th edition Necron FAQ.

Well, I see the Tank Hunter as knowing where to shoot, rather than being able to somehow make the weapon hit harder regardless.

Thus, I see no reason why not.

Yeah one day in the far future, a lowly guard gets the brilliant idea to shoot the brightly glowing gem at the top of the Monolith, resulting in a spectacular explosion. Now guard have a new doctrine when fighting against crons...Shoot the Shiny

Orks no longer have a unit with tankhunter USR. It was deemed too powerful as the orks already have such awesome anti-armour 14 killing power...

Edit: Ok, they have Tankhammas and Warbosses with Power klaws. S10 isn't bad against things you hit on 4+.

My response was to the guy above me who posted that his 5th edition book made Tank Hunter a strength increase.
