Jay Bookman, Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote:
Palin lies could lead to Bridge to Oblivion
By Jay Bookman | Tuesday, September 9, 2008, 12:50 PM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Sarah Palin is out on the campaign trail, this time in Ohio, still repeating the lie that she rejected federal funding for that infamous bridge in Alaska.

“I told Congress, ‘Thanks but no thanks’ for that Bridge to Nowhere up in Alaska,” she said in a speech today. “If our state wanted a bridge, we were gonna built it ourselves.”

Yet even today’s Wall Street Journal, that bastion of liberal, pro-terrorist, anti-American ideology, reaches the only conclusion possible on the facts available:

“Despite significant evidence to the contrary, the McCain campaign continues to assert that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told the federal government ‘thanks but no thanks’ to the now-famous bridge to an island in her home state….,” the Journal states.

The Journal also makes clear that Palin only abandoned the project AFTER Congress had killed federal funding for it, and that “she did not return the federal money. She just allocated it elsewhere.” As late as last September, Palin was complaining that criticism of the project had been unfair, claiming that “much of the public’s attitude toward Alaska bridges is based on inaccurate portrayals of the projects here.”

In other words, it was never “thanks, but no thanks.” It was “thank you very much, and now give me some more.”

As the McCain campaign points out, both Barack Obama and Joe Biden have requested earmarks and voted for earmarks. Neither is anything close to pure on this issue. But neither Democrat is claiming otherwise. They aren’t trying to deny reality. Nor are they trying to construct their entire political identity on that falsehood.

Palin — with the full backing and support of the McCain campaign — is doing herself longterm political damage with this ploy. The American people are watching her repeatedly lie to them, day after day, and watching her do so with no apparent compunction. This is her introduction to the national scene; this is when her image is being cemented into the public mind.

And her image is increasingly that of a guiltless liar.

Some of the Federal money, that earmarked for the access road on the island TO the bridge, was set to revert back to the Federal govenment if it wasn't spent. So she spent it building said access road to nowhere anyway. She'd rather spend the money on a useless road than return it.

So, the crux of the matter is that a Politician is in fact a Gobshite.

Well I never, there's a turn up for the books.

Party Politics is the downfall of Democracy, especially in a two horse race, where one side can gain an advantage not through better policies etc, but through volume of mud slung.

Here’s the timeline of events:

She supported it.
She kept supporting it.
It became a national joke.
She then stopped publicly supporting it, but KEPT the money.
Now she’s claiming she said “No thanks” to the Federal money, when in fact she took it and kept it.

Part of the McCain/Palin platform is an opposition to earmarks, which are budgetary additions legislators tack onto legislation to secure additional Federal spending in their local area. But Alaska accepts more money per capita in earmarks than any other state.

Even if it weren’t hypocritical, the fact that she’s lying about taking the money is pretty egregious.

Another article on the fiction of Palin's fiscal conservatism:

http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1839724,00.html

Time wrote:Sarah Palin's Alaskonomics
Tuesday, Sep. 09, 2008 By MICHAEL KINSLEY

Sarah Palin thinks she is a better American than you because she comes from a small town, and a superior human being because she isn't a journalist and has never lived in Washington and likes to watch her kids play hockey. Although Palin praised John McCain in her acceptance speech as a man who puts the good of his country ahead of partisan politics, McCain pretty much proved the opposite with his selection of a running mate whose main asset is her ability to reignite the culture wars. So maybe Governor Palin does represent everything that is good and fine about America, as she herself maintains. But spare us, please, any talk about how she is a tough fiscal conservative.

Palin has continued to repeat the already exposed lie that she said "No, thanks" to the famous "bridge to nowhere" (McCain's favorite example of wasteful federal spending). In fact, she said "Yes, please" until the project became a symbol and political albatross.

Back to reality. Of the 50 states, Alaska ranks No. 1 in taxes per resident and No. 1 in spending per resident. Its tax burden per resident is 2 1/2 times the national average; its spending, more than double. The trick is that Alaska's government spends money on its own citizens and taxes the rest of us to pay for it. Although Palin, like McCain, talks about liberating ourselves from dependence on foreign oil, there is no evidence that being dependent on Alaskan oil would be any more pleasant to the pocketbook.

Alaska is, in essence, an adjunct member of OPEC. It has four different taxes on oil, which produce more than 89% of the state's unrestricted revenue. On average, three-quarters of the value of a barrel of oil is taken by the state government before that oil is permitted to leave the state. Alaska residents each get a yearly check for about $2,000 from oil revenues, plus an additional $1,200 pushed through by Palin last year to take advantage of rising oil prices. Any sympathy the governor of Alaska expresses for folks in the lower 48 who are suffering from high gas prices or can't afford to heat their homes is strictly crocodile tears.

As if it couldn't support itself, Alaska also ranks No. 1, year after year, in money it sucks in from Washington. In 2005 (the most recent figures), according to the Tax Foundation, Alaska ranked 18th in federal taxes paid per resident ($5,434) but first in federal spending received per resident ($13,950). Its ratio of federal spending received to federal taxes paid ranks third among the 50 states, and in the absolute amount it receives from Washington over and above the amount it sends to Washington, Alaska ranks No. 1.

Unfortunately for the democrats it doesn't matter what you say on the issue now.

Her and McCain have been branded as the team to smite corruption/special interest/earmarking and now the white women voters have swung in behind her its suddenly game on.

Obama can't attack her, he had earmarked over $1 billion in his short term in the senate (last article I saw on the issue).

Also Matt Damon is against her... so that will make even more people vote for her... MATT DAAAAMMMMOOOONNNN!!!! (Go watch Team America World Police for reference)

If McCain puts a corrupt incompetent into position to be president of the US when he has a heart attack or melanoma catches up with him, of course we need to talk about her too.

You're missing the point where she said she'd cooperate, then changed her mind.

And you're still failing to acknowledge her lying about the bridge money. $300 million, my friend.

Gonads, of course the Obama campaign can hit her on earmarks. Earmarks are not necessarily a bad thing. Obama's never opposed them. She's the one who allegedly opposes them; except that actually her state takes in a ton of money on them, so she's actually a liar. She takes earmark money, and retroactively claims to be against it. That's a legitimate basis for criticism.

Even so, an investigation into a Politicians integrity, whether invited or not is quite a big deal. After all, it could be that a bluff has been called, and by the time people find out, could be too late.

But I agree about the McCain thing though. Perhaps he on his own just isn't that much of a threat? Not saying thats my opinion. I'm British, ergo my opinion on this counts for nowt, but I do wonder sometimes.

None of the candidates for President or VP are the best qualiified to be president. Arguably, none of them are qualified to be in government. The more I hear about all of them, the less that I like all of them.

I think Palin was a bad choice for McCain. I think a lot of people, including me, think he has a high risk for dying in office and are not comfortable giving Palin the keys to the Oval Office. Considering that McCain was attacking Obama's experience, or lack of, it makes it more of a questionable decision to me. Which makes me think that she was picked because she was a young, white, woman who's kinda cute (in a Tina Fey way) and has an outgoing personality. That she was a governor, or fought against corruption in her home state (which there seems to be a lot of!), or anything else was just icing on the cake. Thinking about it, Tina Fey might have been a better choice.

In addition, Obama has been going after McCain's campaigh staff, which is a bunch of ex-lobbyists, and there's been no response from McCain, that I'm aware of. Maybe that is typical politics, maybe it isn't - but it certainly doesn't sit well with me.

Obama is more qualified for the position than Palin. Sure, she was an executive, a mayor and a governor. It's not like she was the Mayor of New York or Governor of Pennsylvania. She was a small-town mayor and governor of one of the smaller populated states.

Love the assumption that criminal = Democrat. Hackers tend toward the apolitical; it's more likely that her security didn't keep up with her celebrity, and they managed with her what they try daily with anyone else of note.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

Anonymous is largely apolitical, mostly interested in mischief. Even if they were Democratic supporters, it’s a nonsense to attribute that to the party itself. Unless of course you want to establish the precedent that anything done by a party’s supporters can be attributed to the party itself. That’s a very dangerous precedent for a Republican supporter to establish... you’d have to start explaining the push polling that’s currently targeting Jews in Florida, for one thing.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. I dunno, I like McCain personally. Mostly just because I've seen him on the daily show several times so I know he's less of an ahole than most politicians and seems to have half a sense of humor, so there is some human left in him still. I could care less about his political affiliation.

I don't know much about this Palin lady, I did my best to ignore the poopstorm that the democrat media dug up to smear her name all over the place just because she's a republican. I do think it was kinda cheap of the replublican fellas to pick her though. Seems like the only reason they did was because she's a she, and they want some of the extra female votes that Hillary would have gotten. I don't think I want her for president after McCain kicks the bucket in a year or 2.

I dunno why people act so surprised when they dig up crap on politicians. All politicians lie to get elected, some just get caught at it easier than others. The 2 or 3 that aren't big fat liers just haven't been politicians long enough...
