Didn't want to bring this up in the WoC Spearhead thread, so started this one. At the LVGT they announced that the Warriors of Chaos Spearhead box will be the last Spearhead that they do. No more, est finito.

Just thought that was interesting.

If they had priced them a little better, they would have sold better, no doubt. Though it didn’t help that most of them had a pretty impractical mix of units. I actually expect the WoC one to sell substantially better, since it’s all good stuff.

The reason being, they have a two week shelf life. After that, most of the stuff is out already, and there is no discount associated with it. They are better off just selling the individual components as they are released then have a bucnh of bundled sets they can't get rid of after the initial release.

It would appear that us veterans don't always want to buy every new model for the armies being revamped. We'd rather buy what we need instead..

most spearheads contain large ammounts of characters or crap units, easier to buy a battle force or individual units.

I tend to agree with those that say there needs to be a bigger discount on the items. In the past when army deals came out we were getting some where close to 20% discount on all the contents if not more. Now we get something like 5% at most and 1/2 the models we won't even use.

The Daemon Spearhead was great as I could use everything in it (and have) but I felt no need to by the Dark Elf one as I was only going to use 5 or 6 models from it.

Most of the army deals actually are a pretty good deal and some of the apocalypse boxes are an amazing discount. The Spearheads aren't really intended for this purpose, the supposed "perk" isn't a discount but instead getting your hands on the new stuff a few weeks early. I guess that's not enough of a perk.

Particularly if it is going to take you a few weeks to prep and paint it all anyway I'd wager

I thought about ordering the SM spearhead, but it occured to me that half the models would just be "yay, paint project!" material, which would just take away from the horde of primered models that NEED painted's time.

That and it would cut into my Reaper, PP and Dark Age "oooh pretty paint!" time

Yeah great idea bad execution.

GW can afford to sell these a bit cheaper and sell tons more.

I would be willing to buy a spearhead that contains a ton of units I wouldn't normally use if the pricing was better.

They wont really be missed.

If they made something practical like Apocalypse sets of Drop Pods I'd be broke right now. What the hell am I supposed to do with 10 characters from 10 different chapters and then a couple of 5 man squads of veterans?

I miss the army deals that come with a limited edition mini, those were useful at the very least and gave you a good discount.

The spearheads use to be a good idea.

Spearheads then and now:

Then: They came with a limited edition mini.
Now: No LE mini. It seems like they did not sell as many spearheads when they dropped this.

Then: They were packaged as an army starter and came with a good mix of units.
Now: They come with just all of the new models which you mostly can't use all of.

Then: They were at a good discount from what you would pay if you bought them separately.
Now: No discount.

Then: You would get the Codex/Army book early
Now: The book is not worth all of the other negatives.
