Your crazy! I'll give you one of the better (not best) GW writers but top of the SF genre? this isn't flame bait but you should be taken out back and shot for thinking he even comes close to matching writers like Weber, Ringo, Drake, and Stirling (those are the quick and easy military sf writers off the top of my head).

That being said, i didn't buy the last one in hardback and i won't buy this one in hardback, thanks for the info

Yeah I've got nothing against Abnett, I'll be getting Titanicus from Amazon tonight, but the exciting adventures of Gaunt & co should have been put to bed about 6 books ago.

Still, this is limited edition, which makes it awesome1!1, really worth £5 and in no way a rip-off.

Abnett!!!!

I've tried to pick up and read the black library novels. Abnett is the most "ok," but seriously not that great. Best that GW has that's true enough, but I hear it too often the almost worshiping at the alter of Abnett. And all too often I ask the devotee "have you ever read..." where I proceed to list the books that undoubtedly inspired 40k. To my dismay the answers almost always "no"... and a piece of me dies.

Run that list of authors by us. I've read Niven , Heinlein , Koontz , Herbert , P K Dick , Orwell , H G Wells, all kinds , I'm not saying he's original or inovative but Abnett can get action down on paper very well. Necropolis has a huge scale of action on one hand and some smaller personal moments too.

By the way you can read books by Drake , Weber , Ringo for free at this website... http://www.baen.com/library/

I read all kinds of quality non-Warhammer sci-fi and fantasy, but I still feel that Dan Abnett is quite good, especially on the game-tie-in series fiction playing field. In fact, his work, along with Sandy Mitchell's, are about the only Warhammer novels I _will_ read. He's also the only one of the Warhammer authors that I would recommend to a non-Warhammer player looking for something fun to read.

The "ZOMG, Abnett isn't Hemingway, LAWLZ" crap gets kinda old.

Gaunt needs to be put to bed and smothered with a pillow, things are getting tedious and drawn out now. If you want good Abnett read the Eisenhorn trilogy or the first Ravenor book. Hell, his Fell Cargo fantasy novel is also a fine, clichéd read.

Getting tedious and drawn out? As in present tense?

Apparently Fell Cargo is his favourite BL book (of those that he's written at least). I would definately reccomend it, read it twice (mainly because it's short). I think it's a shame he didn't do any follow-ups ala Florin & Lorenzo.

Ringo?? Weber?!?! Pardon me - *vomits* - I'm better now.

Scalzi, Herbert, Heinlein, Card, Westerfield, Campbell... SO many. But Abnett destroys every author you named.

Kinda on subject, Abnett cowrites the Marvel comic series Nova. I currently read it and it is rather well. Hope I get a new one this week.

Crud, sold out. I will fully admit that I am an Abnett addict, despite the deus-ex-machina BS that ends every other novel.

Screw ebay, I'm watching the Pirate Bay. 1200 copies my a$$. I'd have bought one if they weren't limited.

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

Let me know (pm obviously) if you get it, or Lightning King/Dark Tower too, from Pirate Bay (I'd prefer the latter with "Dark King" chopped off though, as a few bytes of disc space is worth infinitely more than any text spewed forth by Graham McNeil )

Holy crap.

Anyone look closely at the web page for this "book."

I misread it.

At 320 pages, it's a nice read.

At 32 pages, I feel like I just got reamed (sans lubricant).

I opened the box and thought "This is a thin stack. Where are the other 4 books. The customs form said all 5 were in here..."
Then I pulled the 5 "booklets" out.
It's a FREAKING SHORT STORY. LOL My camera manual is thicker than this thing! : )

Good thing it's limited edition and 40K fans will buy ANYTHING GW if it's Ltd Ed.

I was going to keep 1 and sell 4, but I'll probably just read it while I'm... on my throne... and sell all 5 copies.

I don't need a new Black Library PAMPHLET.

Plus, it's only 30 pages of stories and 2 pages ov advertisements.

The original short stories in Inferno were good, and the first novel was goodl. Necropolis had moments where it sucked less than some of the rest. But seriously, everything after that is just repetative crap.

So, I read it last night.

Two words:

Not impressed.

I like Dan Abnett's work, but this just wasn't up to snuff, IMO.

About 10 to 12 pages in, I already knew what the deal was. The only question I had was about the specifics of the Star... which was a very ho-hum revelation.

Oh... and, including the 2 pages of drek at the beginning of the story, we're whittled down to a sparse 28 pages (which would fill about 14 to 21 pages in a "real" book).

Anyone else have any experiences with it to share?

Dunno.
Had you bought it, you might've been pleased, in the end.

I bought 5 copies.
Listed 2 on ebay. One auction & one Buy it Now.

Buy it Now sold in less than 24 hours for $75, and the auction ends tonight... it's at $48 right now.
When the $75 BiN sold so fast, I listed another BiN. It hasn't sold yet, but it's seeing a good amount of trafic (considering the high price).

So, 2 sold for (minimum) $123 combined, a third is listed and 2 more are waiting in the wings. All for a >$60 US investment.

I'm happy with it. Good book! LOL
