So I'll be doing my 1st tourney in about 2 years. Have not played a SINGLE game of 5th ed yet, but will get in about 6 games between now and the tourney. small, local deal, about 50 players if that.
here is what I'm bringing to the table:
Doctrines: Grenadiers ( they are scoring units) drop troops, COD, special wpes squads, light infantry.
HQ: Jo w/honorifica, cmd squad with mastervox, standard, medic lasguns in Chimera w/ ML, HB, subber, HK missile, ex armor smoke, and searchlight
AT squads x2 w/ ML, light inf
fire support squad w/3x HB's, light inf
2x sniper squads, light inf
2 platoons with 2 squads each, plas and ML, comd sections have dropping meltas or plasma
2x squads of grenadiers with double plas, mounted in chimeras, kitted out as above, but w/out the HK missiles
2 bare bones russes w/ HB
1 sentinel with lascannon and HK missile
1995 pts.
the light infantry support squads will set up last and get good los on enemy units
the russes do what they do best, boom...
HQ provides ldrship in whole army with the mastervox, while thier chimera provides dakka for targets of opportunity
grenadiers and platoons take objectives, and hold them, using the chimeras as cover
sentinel is there cause I could not find any other place to put 65 pts, and he *may* pop a tank on turn 1 before he gets smoked
***note*** there will be NO lascannons in the army , it's a fluff thing..and in 5th ed, I have decided that I am ignoring AV14 anyway, so to hell with the land raiders, and monoliths...I was in the army for 10 years, and I just cant get over the thought of an infantry unit toting 6' long laser cannons everywhere they go...I know it's stupid, but hey, what can I say, I'm a fan of the AT-4 rocket launcher
lemme have it, what do you think?

And I was an Infantryman for 8 years and I can agree with you to a point, but lets face it...the reality of the game is that your opponents are going to field AV14 vehicles, so if you want to win (what point is there of having a battle except to win? I never went into combat trying for a tie. You fight to win, period.) you'll need to be preparerd to deal with AV14.
My 2 pfennigs worth.

Lascannons won't kill AV14 in 5th anyway, you need Meltaguns for that.
And you can save a lot of points by not bringing Voxes. You get Leadership bubbles for free, so use them. Don't waste points on useless Vox Networks.
Put those points into more men and more guns.

If you're going to load up on melta guns then drop troops is the army to do it in. Deep strike helps with the 6" problem and there are a few ways to help the 1 shot problem.
What about switching from special weapons squads to ratlings? You're paying 150 points for as many sniper rifles as 66 points of ratlings. You could buy ten ratlings with BS4 sniper rifles for 40 points less than what you're paying for 6 BS3 sniper rifles.

I'll have 8 meltas in 2 drop teams to deal with any *hard* targets, and these days, most people rarely field more than 2 LR's anyway, so should be ok with that..I would love to use ratlings, but I believe they cost a doctrine point...then again, so do special wpns squads, so good point there.
@ HMBC- ditch the voxes, and buy more melta? any other issues with this list other than the weakness against AV14? if you faced it in a tourney, would it worry you at all, assuming the player was halfway decent at the game?

The long and short of it is that it involves six of the rhomboid beasts.
HB or AC over ML especially now in 5th. AC superior vs light vehicles, HB superior against targets in cover. Cover should be more predominant, unless your organizer is avoiding current GW rules. (IMHO this will begin to happen with increasing frequency until one day someone starts holding homebrew tourneys for people with any old sci fi pieces - GW will cut the prices of their boxes in response and turn its retail operations into dedicated day cares for children under the age of 12)
