I was on the BoLS site and they had news of a GW modular game board for $175. Can anyone confirm this?

Yes, at GDUK there was a modular board system displayed, it got very positive feedback from everyone who saw it, I think it's in six pieces as the basic kit, though one assumes you can buy more sections and expand it. It's made from very sturdy plastic and requires painting/flocking etc by you. The pieces lock together in any formation so you can have hills round the edge or hills in the middle. It's also designed to be sturdy enough that the six piece board at 6' x 4' could happily overhang the edges of a 5' x 3' table and still be strong and sturdy.

I couldn't say what the US price would be, sorry.

Well, for us that would depend on whether your in a hurricane/typhoon region or not. If you add natural talent, and available work tools such as bandsaws, or even jigsaws, sandpaper, varnish, etc, etc, if could vary.

Sometimes the market product is just easier to get. Now, if the price would drop from $175 US, I might be interested, and if I knew would type of future support (read: additional add-on's) I might be kinda keen on this.

Of course, I still have to learn how to add flock first.......considering my recent attempt to add sand to the bases of figures sucked.

I was slightly excited by this. I actually preordered one without seeing it.

Now that I have seen it. Very underwhelming. Hard to validate $175 for it.

Have to admit, I'll pay someone to change the oil in my car before I buy this thing... (I'm a mechanic)

Seriously, if you're creative/practical enough to build/convert/paint minis, knocking up a decent standard terrain board shouldn't be that hard.

Nah. Storing four 2x2 pieces of terrain will be much easier this way. Also, the pieces
interlock and the bottoms look honeycombed and very sturdy (I'll have to kick the
tires on one myself before I decide). If the material is as sturdy as it looks, then it's
going to be on my "buy someday" list, although it'll make a huge dent on my Warhammer
Fantasy building.

They're taking pre-orders on this at my local store. One of the bigger target audiences seems to be parents. The carrying case that comes with it means that when you're taking your kids to grandma's and you know they'll be bored for a few hours, you can bring a gaming table with you.

From what I heard at a GW store last Thursday......

It will be a kit on it's own. People will be able to flock and paint it any way they want.

Are you thinking the CoD terrain will be included?

Keep in mind this table breaks down into 6 - 2'x2' pieces that go into a bag for storage. I don't see that 3" thickness hill being included.

Every picture has shown the hill, I would kind of assume it was part of the kit.

I think it is a great idea! I hardly have enough time to build and paint my armies, terrain always takes a back seat. If I could dry brush and flock a pre made terrain board that is easy to store and haul around I am all for it! $175 is not that bad for a game board that looks great and will last for years! Plywood boards are too hard to travel with, this is much better. I hope they make several variations so you can have all kinds of terrain!

I very very seriously doubt it includes any terrain. It looks like just 6 pieces designed to lock together to give you a gaming surface.

Honestly, while a non-flocked version would be nice to have so we can finish it ourselves, those of use who could finish the pieces really have the skill to make our own board for far less than what this will cost. The smart marketing move would be to have it come pre-flocked, then it will really appeal to the mothers of younger gamers, who don't want their little monsters spreading glue and flock all over their kitchen table trying to finish the pieces.

[rant]
As for all this "why does it have to be grass" whining, get the F%# over yourself. Grass is the easiest and non-coincidently the most popular way people flock tables. If you've decided to do some exotic basing of your miniatures, you really are an @$$ if you go somewhere expecting someone to have made tables for you to play on that match your basing. You've spent how much time painting your precious army and yet could never even be bothered to try to make your own table or terrain? You should be thankful someone else had the graciousness to provide you with something to play on besides your mother's dining room table. I'm sure you'll love playing with your elitist based miniatures assaulting across those fields of doilies and placemats.

Who is whining? I was asking him the question, why couldn't you just base/flock
the table your own way anyway?

Read the price to the far right of the image, its above 200 pounds sterling, which is way above the 75 pound retail price.

I overreacted once. True story.

I think the table looks great, but I'm not about to pay that much. Its sad, since I live in a tiny apartment and don't have room to store a table. It has given me the idea to just go to home depot and get a 6x4 plyboard chopped up into 2x2 squares and maybe get some hinges or something.

Try 2'x4' strips of 1/4" pressboard. It's the brown stuff that looks like really really compressed and lacquered cardboard. It's lighter, pretty durable, doesn't bend easily and you can simply stretch and staple some felt over it.

Well i've heard alot about these:

story seems to be....

6 2'x2' pieces can be assembled any way together- easy to join but still leaves a fairly straight edge (similar to modular hills apparently)

They're made of the same stuff as the other terrain so should be quite hard wearing

Comes the same as the modular hills- so its the best of both worlds- you can paint it however you like, you can flock it, sand it, cover it in glue- and use it however you need it- however for the less inspired- it can just be given a nice simple paintjob

Finally the pics floating around of buildings and such are going to be christmas bundles with the board plus a load of terrain- theres going to be a few of these- one of them a 40k, one warhammer and i believe a generic one (LOTR?)

So basically a nice easy to use board without the hillarity of watching someone slice ther thumb off, measure the battons wrong and stick their mug of tea to the unfinished board.... (yeah last table i built was fun)

...even easier than flocking it, just buy a piece of 6x4 green felt and throw it over it...
can fold right up and go in the bag with it...

and if your REALLY ambitious, you could take on the ridiculously complex and advanced process of sewing a piece of desert themed felt to one side of it, and have either grass or desert to play on...

when i first heard about the table i thought it would have some terrain on it that would stay there, a la a few hills in either the middle or sides of some of the squares...
kind of disappointing that its just a jumbo puzzle for grown-ups...

Making terrain is generally cheaper than buying it. One can make alot of hills with a foam cutter and some insulation foam. One could make alot of buildings with balsa wood/plasticard/cardboard.

In my experience, however, most home made terrain comes out looking like crap.

The GW terrain might be expensive, but it looks good and it's pretty much "done" right out of the box (barring city fight stuff and of course, painting.)

This 6'x4' looks to be the same - fairly expensive, looks damn good, pretty much finished out of the box, and practical for storing. I'll pay for all those bonuses, thank you very much.

Not something I would buy cause I'm too much of a do-it yourselfer. I can't knock it for those who'd prefer to purchase it though. At least GW is trying to think outside the box and offer some products that compliment the game. I just don't know if this is the kind of thing that will really make a big impact for them though.

Personally I like the 6'x4' felt with green on one side and tan on the other. At least that you can throw down on a floor if you're lacking a sizable table.

Maybe it's just me, but if even one of my minis was on the floor, I wouldn't let anyone else in the room... if the whole lot were on the floor I'd have some sort of cranial meltdown.

It will take every part of my willpower not to immediately buy two of these... or even one. I buy almost every bit of terrain GW puts out (except those $40 aquarium plants... those were absurd), and it is so hard not to just go 'gimme gimme gimme!'.

However, given the price, this board ranks up there with the aquarium plants when it comes to lucidrously inflated price tags.

The only reason I'd get one is to make it up as a snow table, because I like snow tables...

Amen. First thing I thought of. For some reason, with those hills, I immediately thought, "Hecks yes, a snow table for my Space Wolves." And then I saw the price tag and though, "I'd have to sell my Space Wolves." And that's as far as the conversation went.

I can confirm all of this, saw it on the pre-order system.

2x2 pieces of the rigid, grey plastic we all know and love. Same stuff as the modular hills released last year (or the year before?). Note that I said the rigid, hard plastic Hills and not the flexible, soft plastic Craters. This 6x4 table has four pieces with hills and crags molded, and two pieces without hills but still some trerrain features molded. It is NOT flat and featureless. You can connect the 2x2 pieces any way you want.

GW Modular Hills and 40K/Fantasy plastic terrain is also not included but can be added to the table.

$175 and the case with stackable 2x2s confirmed.
