I just picked up the Hordes army starter for the everblight army. I've also picked up a forsaken and plan on getting a unit of raptors. Is this a good start? I'm trying to get some friends into the game as well, any types on converting WH40K folks to PP?

Would it be easier to start with Warmachine? or a different Hordes army?

Hi & welcome!

Legion is a great beginning faction, as it is by far the most forgiving Hordes faction (the equivalent of Cryx in Warmachine).
Fury management is the key element to Hordes & Legion has a plethora of ways to manage Fury.
I should add that they are very fast & very capable of killing almost anything, but quite..."squishy" I think is the right word? If you get the first strike, you will be in good position against most lists. Just be warned that as the attrition game sets in you stand to be fighting an uphill battle.

I'm not sure where you're playing, but any LGS should have a small following of Privateer Press gamers. If you care to invest, you could just pick up another battle box (either Hordes or WM) & have the 350 point Mangled Metal (Tooth & Claw in Hordes, iirc) games with people to kinda give them & yourself some experience before dumping a butt-load of cash on models.

Good luck. One caveat, this game seems very unbalanced at times (and in my humblest of opinions it is unbalanced), but the simple fact that every faction has overpowered models really does even things out in the end. I promise!

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

your mom is unbalanced. Welcome to dakka.

Warmachine has easier rules. Hordes is (imo) more fun. Do you like big steam punk things or awesome beast things.

The other consideration, you are going to get into using infantry much faster playing Warmachine unless you research your 'caster. Hordes puts a much greater emphasis on the Warlock/ Warbeast dynamic.

You know what I mean though. At least, as a Legion player you should know what I mean. Do you think it would be better for a beginning player to start with Legion or with Skorne or Trolls?

Thanks for the initial comments! If I had the money I think buying a second starter would be a great idea to just play with people! Is Warmachine a bigger game? Closer to WH40k in the sense that it uses armies? Or is it just the nature of the system that you'll need infantry?

nah warmachine is in no way like 40k. I suppose in warmachine you COULD choose to play infantry heavy, but then you might as well play 40k lol =P

IMO the 2 games are completly different.

Tough call. Legion might be slightly more challenging, along with Circle. Thing is, having said that Skorne is usually considered the toughest to win with I think, at least in Primal. But the battleboxes are all equally complicated I would say.

I would say just go with the line of miniatures/ fluff that is more interesting.

I mean Legion has Nyss, Seraph, Carnivean, Angel, ... they are just kind of one-dimensional. No power attacks. If anything that makes them more accessible.

Just stay away from the Raek and :( the Teraph and a new player should be OK. Warmongers with Vayl, Swordsmen with everyone else. And read the cards carefully . And probably the errata too, especially for Vayl and the twins.

Warmachine infantry is what drew me to the game, which is probably why I play
Protectorate of Menoth (Knights, Choir and Zealots, oh my).

I played 750 pt. list in the Legends Event that featured epic Kreoss a devout, and
as many Exemplar as I could cram into the list.

Warmachine has tended toward units and solos until recently because you could get similar effects from them as warjacks and they were much less fragile.

That's started to change recently, but most 500 point lists are still going to see at least one unit of some kind.

I've found the best way to get people into it is to paint your models real nice, and give the books with all the pretty pictures to people to read. Eventually they'll be sucked in.

Or GW will piss you off enough to drive you toward PP...then when you play a game or 2 you'll see that WM/Hordes is a better system!

Seriously, I love Warmachine/hordes, the sad thing is I just recently started myself. I got into warmachine when it first came out and went the Khadoran route, but nobody played at that time. Then I got into hordes, specifically trollbloods, the Legion, then I bounced back to warmachine with the pirates, but still no games...until a few weeks ago.

I went to a LGS, and had one of the vets take me through several box set battles, now I am hooked. The thing I love most about WH/Hordes is the fact that the rules and the fluff go hand in hand unlike 40k. PP stuff does what it says, and only recently do I see that coming out in GW's stuff.

Anyway, I like the fact that the game is "unbalanced" but for every "tough" list there will be another list that will kick you in the balls and make you run crying to your momma.

Also I think I dig Hordes more myself, not sure why but when I played my repainted trollbloods, I found myself enjoying the game more. But I do love my Butcher too!

Just my own 2 cents,
Chappy P!

Thanks for all the feedback! Sadly I think I lost a cryx battle box I picked up in 2003 when they first came out... I do have the Hordes Legion one though! I'm trying to get my local friends involved as the trip to the nearest LGS is a pain! I guess I just need to paint these guys up and let the game speak for itself!

The game is balanced in that every faction has something that will rape you. Skarr bomb, Testament + Vengers or now Testament + Bastions whenever they come out, Haley turtle....Vlad...

Just give some good demo games, the system is a lot of fun to play. A lot of people will find that they like rules that make a bit more sense than 40k rules. Although to be fair to 40k, having rules that are as detailed for single models as warmachine's are would make 40k take way too long to play with the scale they are after. 40k is supposed to be more of the squad based game.

"But remember that there are over 1000 chapters of spase marienz! So the SM codex has to cover over 1000 different kinds of spase marienz! Codex CSM only has to cover 1 kind (the Chaos kind). And I don't even think Eldar are a kind of spase marienz at all. Hurr!"

It's also designed to be balanced toward diversity of units. Yeah, there are some spam lists but because it's about synergies and combination, you're going to want a certain diversity of units, solos, jacks/beasts, etc., whereas 40k is all about maximizing on one thing.

I guess I'll stick with legions then and just add the raptors and perhaps another beast? I think I just need to play more!

Thanks for all the help and suggestions, hope I can convince some of these guys!

Starter + Raptors + Seraph + Forsaken or Shepard isn't a bad little force. Give you melee beasts, ranged beasts, a unit, and a solo to mess with.

I decided to try incubi, just because I like the idea. So I have the starter set plus 1 forsaken, a squad of six archers and 5 incubi. If I take 4 raptors and 1 more incubi that will take me up to 500 points.

You can't take "1 more incubi". You either take a set of 5 or none. If you decide to take the full FA (i.e. 10 Incubi) you won't have enough small based living warrior models to let them all enter the table.
