Are these any good? I take it fluff-wise they are supposed to be the same as Champions, just not as martial/ dedicated. Champions are the braves/ military and these guys are the Davy Crocketts.

So looking at the thing, Champions are Champions.
You can get 10 Kriel Warriors for the same price as 6 Scattergunners, and the Kriels look to be better in close combat anyway.
So basically the Scattergunners just shoot their cool gun a couple times? Seems like their leadership is a big issue. Lose the leader, you lose the RAT6 and CMD8.
They can't get a freebie bonus from a solo or something? That, and Madrak and Grissel are both CMD9. Looks like a worthy bodyguard-type uni for a skirmishing force.

Fell Callers make troops Fearless and can give them +2 to hit. Grissel can get them an extra +2 to hit and damage and a free move after their combat action (but the free move won't stack with the Fell Callers +2 to hit call). Doomshaper has a spell that lets a unit reroll missed to hit rolls.
I don't play trolls, and I've never seen them on the table, so I can't offer you any personal experiences about them. The common internet perception is that they are too fragile for their points.

They could definately use an extra couple points of ARM, coming in between Kriel and Champions. Maybe they did it on purpose.

Scattergunners are pretty useful when it comes to clearing out loads of infantry. WarCry plus Doomys Fortune let these guys wreck face! They are a bit fragile but Ive never regretted running a smallish unit (6-8). A full unit is a bit unwieldly and very expensive point-wise.
They fill a role we have very little of in our army and that is AOE spam.

I've not run 'em. For shooting, I'd rather have specialized beasts (impalers, fire troll, slag troll) or pygs. I tend to run a more whompy list with champs anyway.

I've never run them in a troll list. They're point-expensive and fragile. Have a low RAT, which with the spray template isn't horrible since they might catch several models under the template, and a short range. And the special order isn't that great (if it was more like bayonet charge, it'd be better), and in general, I don't like unit leader only Orders.
Some people like them, but they seem to fall into trap at point values:
1. For about the same points, and extra light beast (and trolls have great lights)
2. For not many more points, you could have champs (who are rightfully feared by all)
3. For less points, a cheap unit (like kriel warriors or pygs)
Some people have success with them. I own 8 of them, and they've been unassembled since I got them in a trade over a year ago (granted, with 2 kids under 4, I've played like 5 games of anything since Adepticon).

I tried them out last night.
I think the temptation to slaughterfest should be resisted unless you can buff them with doomie or a fell caller. They don't stand much chance of scratching anything with high arm with their puny melee attack.
I love the models so I'm going to use them some more. The shooting attack isn't bad at all, but I think they need the fell caller nearby for maximum effectiveness.

Basically they seem like a moderately useful unit. You can fit them in/ build a list around them, especially in smaller games. Not to be captain obvious. They have the potential for high offense, basically, assuming you can buff them.
Walk up, slaughter Pretorians. If they come back to life or some other hocus-pocus they still have Tough, you should pass two or three rolls out of 6.

I have used these in my troll army. Like the spray template, but they are very easy to kill even with a fellcaller behind them or their tough roll.
I have found that they work best as a short range unit in the middle of my force. With the new focus on Kriel warriors I think these guys are my wide out troopers now.
Good luck.

I personally dont think that scatter gunners are worth it
kreil warroirs are really good with a fell caller plus you can have more eg
10 kreil with caber tosser and unit attachment whcih makes 13 in all they swarm the oppenent which is wht trolls need
they have nice abilities and put them with a fell caller and you got a hell of a combo
