So I'm a big, fat hypocrite. I've railed against GW and their prices, rules and other assorted traits, vowing never to play or buy from them again. But then my friends (who are very much to blame for this) offer to practically throw a couple of sets of the Black Reach Orks in my lap. Who could refuse that? But then when I start thinking of an army style (with a bit of help from my fellow OTers), it quickly mushrooms. Like a cloud.

Over the next few whiles, I'll be making an Ork army based on the Warmachine universe. Specifically, I'm going for the Magnus agenda storyline, though there will be other extra stuff added on. But overall I'm going for a very steampunky Ork army. Good times. I never said GW couldn't make a mean model.

To start off, I've gotten more involved in my base-work since I started playing Warmahcine, and I'm continuing that trend with this army. After shopping around, I shrunk in horror at the thought of adding about an extra dollar per model for fancy resin bases. Still, I'd found one style I'm trying to emulate. Here's a link to their site. For the lazy, it's basically ruined cobblestone, which fits in with the VSF theme quite nicely. I'm making my own out of plasticard and sand and here's the first unit's worth (minus sand):

Speaking of the first unit, I'm starting with a Loyalist Trencher unit as Shoota Boys. As far as I've gotten is my proof-of-concept model, now equipped with his fancy new base.

This is an awesome idea!! I like the "trencher" ork, and I see a lot of possible potential especially if you make Killa Kans into Steam Jacks...Damn it makes me want to do such a crazy idea!! Why did I open this thread, I ask why!?!

Oh and I would make the Big Mech look like Coleman Stryker epic version with heavier armor and all grim looking!

Wow...now I have ideas surging through my head!

Thanks,
Chappy P!

I was reminded of this project in another thread.

Because what's more steampunk than a stompa with a bowler? I mean, really?

Had a guy at the FLGS bring three Potato Head Stompas in. Very similar to this one, but I'm not sure if it's the same guy or not. He only came in for a month or two, and it's been several since.

First, let me say that I am much enamored with your avatar and choice of screen name.

I'm very interested in seeing how your steampunk Orks turn out. I, like Nirglitch, am very much digging the bayonette mod.

A progress report after day 2. I've finished making the bases with the addition of sand and got partially through 2 more Trencha' Boys.

Not a huge update this time. I've been cleaning mold lines off of stuff, mostly. Also I'm waiting for the backpacks and kitbags that I ordered from scalehobbyist.com to arrive before I go crazy adding the details to the guys I've got so far. Also my friends have yet to provide me with my Black Reach orks.

But here's a WIP of one of my Trencha' Boys. He's the heavy shoota boy for the mob, modeled to resemble the Trencher Chain-gun. He'll be getting a tripod for his gun to make him look a little more like it (the thing holding the gun up now is just a place holder). Also upcoming is the Trencha' feeding the bullets into the gun. Anyway, pics!

i would go with finer sand/gravel when filling the gaps between the cobblestones. The finer grit will lie smoother and visually contrast better with the cobblestones i think.

I like the idea and I'm liking your modeling, but I don't think the ideas are meshing. Put some more piping on that bigshoota and a few cranks like the ones from the kans or dreads.

Actually it's my favorite game. Much more fun than 40k. But when I'm provided with half an Ork army (I hope), I can't say no.

That's the plan. I'm switching the hand holds and adding a bunch of details today. More pics forthcoming.

Welcome back. I'm having a lot of fun making Orks again. It's been years and I've forgotten how awesome they are. The steampunk aspect won't be too apparent on this unit (they're just the grunts, after all), but I'm hoping the similarity to Warmachine gets through.

Also, thanks to everyone's comments. The praise is very much appreciated.

But now, reinf-ork-ments! I got a bunch of orks from a friend who no longer had a use for them. Hooray for free minis!

The Big Shoota/Trencha Chain-gun is nearly done. I need to add the shells streaming out, greenstuff the handles some and then it's on to the loader.

I'm coming up on a spot where I need to hold of doing more until I get the stuff I ordered in the mail. I need them before I detail out the boys any further than the ones I've done. Hopefully they'll be here by the end of the week. Cleaning mold lines off of stuff without building it isn't too much fun.

All right! Got my military bits in and the game is back on. I'm re-energized now that I can actually complete some models. Only 12 (or so) more!

First is a normal Trencha' Boy.

Then more progress on the Big Shoota and his loader. I've still got some greenstuff work to be done, mainly on the added bullet belt.

And apart. Note the new eyepiece on the gunner.

The loader still needs his battle damage added.

Hey look, paint!

Testing the color scheme for my boys now that I've got a signifigant number of them built. Also, my friends are nagging me about getting at least 1000 points done. Heh, we'll see.

A couple of notes:
The skin is mostly done with Snakebite and various amounts of white, then a couple of washes of Thraka Green at the end.

The metal is basecoated in grey, which eliminates my least favorite part of painting metals, the basecoat.

The three main colors of the army will be dark blue (Regal, I guess), bone, and a pale brown. They'll be mixed on each boy in various ways (one with a blue shirt, the next with blue pants, the next with blue straps, etc). Of course, the metal is regular silver with brass accents.

Sweet, only like 200 more to go...

Nuthin' a lik of paint won't fix, eh?

The basic rules set for Warmachine is solid, but it seems that they are adding new rules in a sort of haphazard manner. I look forward to the second edition where they will (Hopefully) collect everything, organize it and produce actual army books instead of continuing using those F ing cards. If they do this, I see it easily becoming even more of a competitor for both Warhammer fantasy and 40K than it is now.

HIPPO CRAST KNEE!

I know what you mean. Even though I haven't played 40k in years, I still love the Ork

Loving the Ork chaps.
