Has anyone done it, and if so, and got any advice?
I want a greenlit interior with shades of dark and light green and I'd rather not just rush in where death angels fear to tread. Also, light leakage, but that should be fairly simple.

I've thought about Lighting the interior and exterior of my LR. My plan was to use the engine compartment as space for a Li rechargable battery. Then mount the plug externally so it can be recharged.
There is then plenty of space to run wiring through the LR to all the points where lights are or could be put. I was thinking of using LED's since they draw little power and generate little heat and they come in various colors.
I'm not really up on what type of circuit would be best to use, though I'm sure I could mount and use different switches to accomplish what I want to do. Meh...I might not do it but I thought about it

I would think if you magnetized one of the hatches it would leave you the desired interior access, but you wouldn't have unslightly batteries or wires exposed. Unless that's the look you wanted.

I did this with my Baneblade and made the outside lights work. You could do something very similar. If you want PM and later today I'll write up some instructions for you.

i'm halfway through doing this to a chimera (only started it in 2004 so bear with me!).
i used a local hobby store called squires (in Bognor Regis). they supplied me with the info needed to rig up a green LED (right resistor, switch & power source). managed to solder it up myself & the circuit works!
either a, try to find a similar store (maplines might do it),
b, contact squires for a free catalogue & order from them (i'll supply the circuit info if i can find mine - pm me if this is your chosen path) - btw squires do free postage.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!! |

I'm actually in the process of hinging the side doors on the LR w/ a magnet to hold it in place. A bit of delicate work, but I want both side doors to be able to open. I might just continue to work out lighting the inside and at least the two headlights.

I was actually talking about a paint job, but I have swerved like the graceful artistic swan I am into the light bulb camp. What a brilliant Idea!
Bubba and Ghostinthedarkness, thanks for the offers. PM zipping your way.

From the initial post I am unsure whether you want a paintjob that makes the tank look like it is emitting light, or to add a light source.
Both have their avantages and problems.
I have seen plenty of lighting paintjobs that look very good.
For examples look at this:
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/reaver3.htm
look at the void shield generators, by highlighting parts of the metal surrounding the generator in a mirrored effect thus:
(((((o)))))
you get the illusion of a central lightsource.
There was a nice pic of a necon lord with a warscythe bathed in its own light, but I cannot find it at present.
If you wish to add an led or two you will need to convert up the windows, and seal the interior. Frankly it is more hassle than an illuminating paintjob.
You might get away with it for a Land Raider, but not for anything smaller, for a start few tanks have decent enough interior detail.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

A directional light source paintjob wouldn't really work in an enclosed area like the innards of a LR, unless you had excellent access though. Go with the LEDs, they look really good when done right!

Someone did a brilliant lit-up-eyes Weirdboy. That would show you how to do the LEDs. It's on Dakka Modelling somewhere.

There's a little plastic modelled light by the rear hatch that I assume is there to indicate to the marines to deploy.
With some super careful work, you can replace it with an LED, as above.

Then he should've used really bright LEDS.
Seriously. The 300mcd LEDS just don't cut it in daylight.
5000mcd+ is what you need (and yellow or white for behind green translucents. Green loses intensity, and you already gain the tint from the acetates anyway).
There's a bump inside a Land Raider similar to that rhino one, meant to represent the same thing. Drill it out and replace that with the LED (you can also get bi-color LEDs - like green/red - that change colour depending on the circuit).
