I have been thinking... dangerous as it may be. When I first played 40K back in 1991, I used to love the Squats and had a squad or two. Now that I have gotten back into 40K many years later, I liked the biker dwarfs with lasers style of the Squats. So my thought is to take fantasy dwarfs and convert them to and IG army format. Here are my questions:

1) Has anyone seen this done? Do you have any links to pictures?

2) Is there any reason that this could not be a "Counts As" IG army for tournament?

Let me know what you guys think, thanks.

Technially no, but GW have a phobia about squats getting any coverage it seems! :p

I saw a guy who used regular IG and cut down on their limbs to make them shorter and they looked great.

Some of the ideas that I got kicking around...

Dwarf Thunders = Standard IG squads
Dwarf Iron Breakers = Storm Troopers
Dwarfs on Bikes = Rough Riders

I am of two thoughts about the weapons. Either I will keep as many of the fantasy weapons as possible and run the m as “Counts As”:
Cannon = Lascannon Team
Organ Gun = Auto Cannon Team
Flame Cannon = Plasma Cannon Team
Gyrocopter = Sentinel

Or convert them all to using Imperial weapons. Still kicking ideas around…

Another possibility is to use the Blood Bowl Dwarves as your base minis to work from. They are quite a bit more 40k looking than the chainmail clad plastic dwarves. Though the plastic dwarves would be easier to convert.

I'm not sure I like the fantasy guns added in, they just don't look enough like Squats to me. I'd rather see a squat walker than a gyrocopter too (or maybe find a way to make Bikers into Sentinels, that would be nice).

But you should include some Grey Knight Terminators to be the old Squats in heavy armor (was it Ancestrial armor?). Anyway, the super heavy armored Squats need to make an appearance.

Here is some BfSP Dwarfs that I am using as a test:

All I have done so far is shave the horns off the helmets and put them on the round bases. They don't look bad as a basic trooper.

Those would make good gernade launchers, try to get some cadian lasguns and swap out the barrels. I have several squads of squats that I converted into Imp guard. I use ratlings for my special weapons teams. But overall not a bad idea!

Buy Imperial War Bonds!!!
I play: 30,000+ points and growing
: 5,000+ points
: 10,000+ points
: I'll never tell...
: Necromunda
: And yes I even play Squats!

Hey Guys... I have seen a friend of mine do exactly what you are talking about. It is costly but is is so cool... what you do is take a box of IG troopers and and you take a box of Dwarven Clansman from fantasy. The new ones have leg and body seperated. so you use the legs and heads from the dwarven clansman and use the IG bodies. And you have it. Squat Gaurdsman!!... It looked really cool. I thought they were awsome the only problem is that you have to buy two box to get one model.. But darn did it look cool. The use of the IG bodies make it so you can use all the normal weapon loads. it just they all have beards and squat legs.

I hope this would help

Just a thought.

My girlfriend wanted a 40K Dwarf army. It was cute, but obviously it got me thinking along these lines too...

actually with just a little green stuff you can turn the chain mail coats into regular trench cloth coats. It could look like a squat Death Korps of Krieg.

Thanks for all the links and advice guys!

I am going to try a few things and see how they turn out. Right now I am trying to scratch build some rocket launchers using some Clan Dwarfs that I have lying around. Pictures to follow...

I remember reading an article (can't remember if it was WD or in Citadel Journal, but it was back in the days of 3rd edition), but anyway, it suggested using the ork codex as a stand in for squats.

Now, I know it sounds like a really crazy idea at first, but when you start to look at some of the units and the stat lines of the troops it does start to make some sense.

The quirky behaviour and low leadership of the squats would represent the fact they were left a very broken society as most of their homeworlds had been destroyed by orks after Ghazgkull's first invasion of Armagedon, and also having been subject to thousands of years of repression by the Imperium.

Ork Warlord->Squat Warlord
Nobz in Mega Armour->Hearthgaurd
Bikes/Warbuggies -> Squat Trikes (whatever they were called!)
Lobbas->Mole Mortars or Thudd Guns

I'm not sure that there would be a squat equivalent of a weird boy or a shok attack gun though...

I will try and dig up the article.

Aha! found the article! Citadel Journal Issue 33 - written by Jervis Johnson

I doubt I can post the whole thing for copyright reasons, but it's an interesting read if anyone has that issue.

He went on to talk about two options Imperial Guard codex for a standard Imperial Guard Squat Regiment or the Ork codex to represent Squat Renegades

As far as the ork codex is concerned, this is how it could be interpreted

Warlord = Warboss
HearthGuard = Nobz
Engineer Guildmaster = Mekboy
Ancestor Lord = Painboss
Warrior Squad = Shoota Boyz
Thunder squad = Loota boyz (Flashgitz?)
Weapon Team = Big Gunz
Bike Squad = Warbikes
Heavy Weapon bikes = Warbuggies

Iceholey: Not a bad idea at all... but the more I think about it, I think I am heading down a different path.

The Fluff that I am currently envisioning is a Dwarf homeworld that similar to the Fantasy world that is discovered by the Empire. They are in a steampunk age of development and their fierce and stubborn nature on the battlefield makes them great recruits. Slow to change, they still hold on to some of their weapons and traditions (if it aint broke, dont fix it). The Dwarven Handgun being just as effective as a Lasgun, they saw no reason to give them up for "Fancy Flashlights". Grenade Launchers and Rocket Launchers on the other hand have a proper kick when you fire them and there for they use them. They think that Chain Swords are cute but could never stand up to a proper Axe.

Doctrines that I am currently considering are: Harden Fighters, Sharpshooters, Carapace Armor, and Iron Discipline. I think this accurately reflects their Dwarven nature. I know that there is a good chance that that will go out the window when the new Codex comes out next year. But I am working with what I got for now.

As far as conversions, first attempts at scratch building the Rocket Launcher failed. Might just have to break down and order the bits. I will get pick posted as soon as I get one built.
