Hey all,
I have a WHF army that is all Treefolk, but I haven't played a lot of Fantasy so I don't know if this is really a great plan. Can they win? Or do I lose a lot by leaving out the Wood Elves themselves?
My army more or less looks like this:
one Spellsinger
2 units of Dryads (probably 10 per unit) with Branchwraith
2 Treemen
3 Hawks
I think that's it. It adds up to about 1000 points and I think I'm only allowed to use one Treeman at my current points-total. Does anyone have more experience than me (not hard) on this matter? All comments welcome!

What Point Total are you planning this army to end up as? (2,000, 2250 etc etc)

WE are my first army and first love; I’ve been playing them pretty consistently since 1999, as well as some Chaos and 40k.
All-trees is a viable theme; dryads are widely seen as extremely good and probably a bit underpriced. Treemen are quite good, and the Ancient has the arguably-broken option of the Annoyance of Netlings, which makes him crazy hard to kill against enemy characters. The army being completely Immune to Psychology is a definite advantage, though being unable to Flee from charges has its downsides. The main things you’re missing in an all-tree list are dispel scrolls (not essential, but quite useful) and a battle standard bearers (super, incredibly helpful for the treemen, and very nice for helping treekin and dryads too).
The main things you lose out on by not including any elves are variety and shooting. Just having three units to choose from, and a single type of character, does get dull. When you splash in scroll-caddy mages and/or a BSB, people see it as violating your theme for pure power, so lose respect for your theme.
The best route, IMO, is a nice mix. I like that you’re using Hawks in the list of models you have. They’re a good unit, but some people think they’re a bit weak. Picking some elf units, and not JUST the absolute best ones, will make your army more interesting and fun to play with and against.
Do you have any other units of which you particularly like the look or concept? Is there a particular point total at which you’ll probably be playing? At 1000pts magic and shooting can be a bit disproportionately effective, though trees are pretty durable against both. 2000 is the most common game size in the world. 2250 is pretty much the default tournament size in the US, and increasingly common elsewhere too, as it lets you have a little more stuff in your army without allowing any additional characters.

Forest spirits are a hard nut to crack.
2 treemen (1 an ancient)
5-6 units of dryads
2 wildrider units
x? units of treekin as filler
= a hard as nails army that will run rings wround most opponents but can beat alot of enemies in a stand up fight.

Only concern I would have for this army is the rising number of demon armies out there. Takes alot of the punch out of the dryads when they lose their save and the treeman when all their targets save on a 5+ regardless. Not really sure what you can do against them, but then again someone might....

Is it not worth putting a couple of branchwraiths in such an army for DD. Maybe including one with Radiants?
I'm looking at starting WE atm.

Yes if you are going w/ the themed approach you won't be rocking any Dispel Scrolls what you will instead be going for is Brachwraiths upgraded to lvl 1 and(only 1 can take it) but the ability that adds 1 more dispel scroll. It isn't alot but it's better than nothing
|
You flatter me. But really, I'm just an ordinary guy. I put my pants on the same way anybody else does: I put a gun to the head of my manservant and bark Russian military commands at him until the poor blighter either figures it out or watches his brains exit his forehead.

Glamourkin (or whatever it's called) makes the wizard a forest spirit so that would still be in theme. Same with taking Wild Riders.

Not to be totally dorky, but you could also modify things to look like
woodland spirits and counts-as other choices in the army.
Centaurs = Glade Riders
Satyrs with bows = Glade Guard, Scouts
Ninja Satyrs = Waywatchers

A Wild Hunt themed Wood Elf army would make me drop my habitual Elf hate and go "Cooooooool!"
...
Damn.
I may have just convinced myself to do that army...

Even though i love the all tree theme, and if i ever ran WE it is what i would run...in games past 1000 its mediocre and past 1500 its a joke.
No ranks mean no anvil unit, just skirmishers. with no banner that means no combat res.
You need to take branchwraiths to get the dispel dice and be able to tree sing.
You NEEd to take tree man....as many times as possible.

Now, call me totally dorky, but Ninja Satyrs: isn't that a contradiction in terms? I mean, with all the stereotypes about those carousing Satyrs and how many nights a week their wives wait up for them while they're out drinking, I have some misgivings regarding whether they are capable of moving silently and remaining unseen.
