Hi guys, im new to dakka but thought i would try and get the most out of it.
I haven't painted anything really in a long time. Am used to painting armour based armies (CSM, Eldar, Tau, necrons, Space Wolves) but longed for the day i could collect nids. Now that day has finally arrived i gotta say im a bit terrified of giving them a crappy paint job. I currently have a fex, a tyrant, a broodlord, a lictor, 2 broods of 8 stealers, 8 hormies, 8 gaunts and 3 warriors. Am also intending to buy in the near future 2 zoanthropes and more of everything else.
The paint job i have in mind consists of bleached bone for the chitinous areas and scything talons as well as claws and things like that. Crimson red, electric blue (veins and things)and a light green (havent decided which one yet) for the minor details and i have no idea about the skin colour. Any advice from nid army players or people who have seen some cool nids?
Also any tips on highlighting...i didnt really used to do too much of it back in the day. Just a bit of drybrushing here and there.
Thanks in advance

See this is why personally I could never do Nids cause I feel like you need to copy them after real world bugs, but I hate bugs to much to stand to study them to copy their paint job. Whereas you did that and it resulted in a beautiful model. Well done I say

wow...alex your models look great. I would love to do something like that. Was it a gloss varnish to make it shiny? I think that i shall use a black skin colour, that would really contrast well i think. Any tips on how to make it not just jet black, but a bit lighter?
Thanks for all the advice and pics so far...looking good!

@Ifurita: those look sweet all based and finished, how far have you got with the army???????!!!!
@Lukus: I only used varnish on the tounges. The shine comes from using gw brown ink.
For black with depth look into paynes grey. Black is never just black. mix in some of your carapace colour for the highlights, you should end up with a coherent scheme!!!!!!
Post your progress and good luck with it!!!!

@ Alex. I have 2 figures done ... out of about 140. I have 35 that just got their Raw Umber wash and are getting ready for the next step.
I also highly recommend paynes grey for washes. I use Liquitex. It's actually a very deep blue-grey and it does a fantastic job of deepening and shading colors without making them look dirty. I use it on browns, greys, , silvers, reds, blues, and greens.

I'm in a complete your army event at my LGS, 3 x 750 blocks, which will get 85 of the figures painted over 3 months. For the rest of them, I actually have most of the carapaces done, which then leaves the washing. It's actually quite manageable as I do the carapaces with a #2 flat and the washes with a huge #5

Frontal and side shot of a genestealer concept model. Primed almond, washed with Liquitex Raw Umber, claws and mouth washed with Badab Black. Leviathan Purple used on the fleshy parts. Teeth picked out in white, scorpion green for the eyes, and a VMC pink for the tongue.
