Wow.

Just friggin' wow.
Awesome game, with dang near every new critter encounter being one of those "Oh Sweet Jesus" moments from Alien.

Plus the flamethrower has an explosive mode.

Highly suggest it; there's also a free suit available for download on Live right now.

I just got to the halfway point of the chapters.

Holy jesus at the Leviathan. Something was fun about fighting something akin to a sarlaac pit from star wars--but with a flamethrower.

Yeah, it's a derivative game, but it's source material is exactly right. Resident Evil (the games, not the movies) and Aliens (the movie, not the games)...with some Bioshock thrown in.

It's game like Dead Space that make my TV and home audio purchases truly worth the money.

Fantastic atmosphere.

I kept thinking while fighting in the nursery--

This is what a FPS 40k shooter should be.

The nursery; and then the Leviathan kept making me think of Tyranids. The way the crew changed via the audio logs made me think of Genestealer Cults.

It was pure awesome the entire way I've been to; which is 6/12 chapters.

It's much more derivative of System Shock 2(infected crewmen aboard a starship? Done that.) than Resident Evil and Bioshock(which SS2 basically laid the groundwork for to begin with). SS2 was the very first thing I thought of when I saw the press for this game.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

Saw this at store today... Hadn't read about it anywhere.
Also have to admit that I haven't been reading about any upcoming games for a while.

Looked nice. SS2 was a kickarse-game-and-a-half - the only truly suspensful title of its time, and still probably the best (unless Dead Space is better).

I keep buying games and models, instead of packing to move on Thursday. Then there's Dakka. Damn it! Someone ought to suspend my account for a few days. But, uh, ask first.

Has anyone spent the time to translate the "alien graffiti" on the walls? I wanted to play too much to try (almost to the leviathan at this point), but I'm going to play through again for the achievement harvesting and translate it then.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

I don't think there's any real translation to it, but I've been too busy killing things with the Ripper so...

I have already found a couple of character keys for the graffiti, so I'm assuming that it means something.

Hope hope.

So I passed the game once and was stoked to see that you can 'continue' your game again with the same weapons, so you can finally upgrade all your stuff to the max which is something the completist in me screams to do.

But sadly you can't increase the difficulty rating when you do this, so you're stuck playing the 2nd and subsequent times through the same difficulty level as the first time you played through, which is a damn shame.

I'd really like to try the 'impossible mode' but with the weapons already maxed out.

Anyway, it was a fun game and I enjoyed it. I'd recommend it to anyone who loves the Resident Evil series and sci-fi.

yak,
Most videogames force you to do the hard stuff as a new game. RE, GoW, etc. It is standard practice...that is what makes it hard If you beat Hard, then you can replay on Hard.

I played a bit of a new game on Hard (1st level only), and nothing beats having NO ammo with four creatures running after you.

Game is too easy on replays. Enough ammo to drop some violence on the monsters.

While I agree with you in principle (that the point of a 'hard' mode is for it to be, well hard), I think the way the game is set up it really would have benefited from having the option to continue with your game in the harder setting.

The reason I say this is because the first time I played through I spent a whole lot of time searching around finding (I hope) most of the hidden items and always making sure to collect everything that was dropped by a dead monster. I'd even sometimes run back to the store to inventory stuff to make room so I could go back to an area that had more stuff in it then I could currently carry.

But even doing this by the end of the game I had only managed to max out the stats of two of the guns (the plasma cutter and the Line gun), my suit to level 5, my 'rig' and my stasis module.

I didn't even purchase three of the weapons (beam projector, the buzzaw thing, and the force gun).

In other words, I still had a LOT of things left to upgrade. I really would have enjoyed to play this 2nd time through working on trying out the weapons I hadn't tried and upgrading as much of the other stuff as I could against a more challenging game to help balance out my more powerful weapons.

Hell, I wouldn't even have cared if they didn't give out any achievements for beating it on 'hard' this way, but it really would have made my enjoyment of the game in general skyrocket. Playing through it a 2nd time on medium just to see what the maxed out weapons were like was okay, but it was never challenging. Why can't I have both? Why can't I finish maxing out my weapons and play against the harder setting?

I just don't see giving the option as anything but good. At that point I've already played their game through one time, so why not give me the choice of how I would like to continue on? If I wanted to play the game on 'hard' starting from scratch, I'd still have that option available, but I'd also be able to try the hard or impossible settings with some upgrades just to see what that's like.

I just wish I had the choice because I know I would have enjoyed the game a little bit more if I did.

Fair enough. I see your point, but I understand the decision of the designers as well. I played all three God of Wars (I, II, and PSP) on Hard and Very Hard. When I started Very Hard...I was back at the beginning. That was part of the challenge. I believe you want the choice to amp up the badguys while using a kitted out weapon load. Not quite the same as hard (where they skimp on kit as well).

I'm amazed you made it through without the Ripper or the Force Gun.

I LIVED on those things.

Oh yeah, this game looks cool. I'll probably pick it up after I (finally) buy myself an xbox 360.

... because that totally makes sense.

Yeah, having finally tried those weapons out on my 2nd time through I can definitely see what you're talking about.

When I first started playing I kind of figured that you weren't going to have the money/fusion thingees to get and upgrade all the weaponry so I made a conscious choice to basically just power up one weapon until it maxed out and since I had already started out with the plasma cutter (and it seemed to work pretty well) I just kept cooking with it.

When the plasma cutter is maxed out it's a very versatile weapon. It packs enough punch to take out most creatures in a few shots and it fires/reloads fast enough to allow you to take on a bunch of enemies at once (I always fire it in the horizontal mode).

I just kept stocking up on plasma cutter ammo and made that my mainstay weapon with the line gun as my back-up and the assault rifle and flamethrower used only to clean up really easy situations.

I only picked all those weapons because they were the first ones available to me. I didn't even read the manual to see what other weapons would become available.

If I try it again on hard I would definitely go with the plasma cutter, line gun, force gun and ripper. The only weapon I really can't stand is the beam projector. Having to charge up a shot for a second just sucks.

Heh. I love the Contact Beam. That secondary fire is great when you're facing the big guys that like to burst open and pour out the little guys; and even works against that super zombie git, by blowing his legs out wherever you need to get rid of him

Yeah, I liked the idea of that secondary fire on the contact beam but then I tried out the force gun. Sure it isn't 360 degrees but its arc of fire is good enough to take care of the little buggers and the gun in general is waaaay more versatile than the contact beam IMHO.

Wow, glad to see there's some enthusiasm for this game on DD. I just got it from my wonderful wife for my birthday, but my computer wouldn't play it. :(

Now I' waiting for my new graphics card to arrive.

I've heard it's derivitive and linear, but hey, in the sci-fi action genre (or suspense) it's enough to be well-executed. It doesn't have to reinvent the wheel.

It is very much Resident Evil in space, but I love it. I have just been eviscerated, dismembered, and decapitated for the umpteenth time. Damn shadows...

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.
