Does anyone but me play catachan guard? I swear i only ever see cadians these days, and as the only officially supported variant left standing that seems odd. I hope they dont forget the catachan fluff when creating the new codex. Also, what is your favorite variant and why?

Well if just a couple of the catachans had sleeves then i would consider them... cadians to me are just horrible, i prefered the old metal ones.

But my guard army is alot of mass steel legion infantry, i love them because they have a great look about them, but also you can see them (and as regularly happens in games) getting mowed down very easily. They dont look heroic at all, just look slightly dystopian which for me fits in the dark fluff of 40k i like.

Steel legion are definitely some of the best IG I've ever seen. They're not overly techy (an issue I have with the Cadians) but still look hi-tech enough to fit the setting (One reason i don't like the Vostroyans). The long coats might be simple cloth or they might be something high-tech that provides NBC protection.

As you said, the Steel Legion has a great 'personality' that is a bit dystopian and even menacing. If I was actively playing 40k I'd have likely spent the small-fortune-per-squad to add Kasrkin backpacks and Space Marine shoulder pads to make some Steel Legion into Stormtroopers to go with my Sisters. Simple conversion, but I think it would have looked well.

That Catachans aren't bad minis, and are great for those who want to do something weird like more militant cultists and such. I don't think they quite deserve the reputation they have, but they're jsut a weird feel for the setting. The fluff seems so focused on WWI-inspired battlefields with lots of hazards that make running around without protection a risky proposition: Tyranid biorganisms that choke the life out of everyone, plagues from Nurgle daemons and cultists, or just the massive debris and toxic wastes causes as a byproduct of the Imperium's industry.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.

catachans look good if they have the right background and terrain - jungle and vietnam style camps, not the shelled out cityscapes we often see as terrain.

So if you made a battlefield that did them justice... or... paint them up as drafted gangers forced into the imp guard that might work - sombre colours and grimey looking

I use catatchans, though, with urban grey fatigues as drafted hive gangers, still light infantry, terribly fluffy, and doubles as necromunda gang if needed.

also the Catatchan's are great for converting

I've got a full army of Catachans alongside my Steel Legion Mech Guard and Cadian Traitor Guard. I also know there's a Catachan player in Baton Rouge.
