My Khorne Demonic Legion army debuted at the Chicago GT and over the next couple of weeks or so I'll be showing many pics of the army. Here is a link to GW's website coverage of my army.
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/...1100004&start=4

The debut was successful as the army took Best Army Appearance probably just narrowly edging out Mike Butcher's horde of Nurgle Demons, that took Player's Choice. I decided early on to go with a very strong traditional reds khorne theme with a strong idea of how to base them. I really wanted to steer clear of lava bases as I have seen that do so often, and have had this theme in my head since I built my Khorne beastmen. The basing: crack the earth and have deep pools of blood with demonic hands reaching up dragging things under to the bowels of hell. I also wanted the blood pools to look very wet and viscous so that people would not assume it was just poorly painted lava.

To start out I did up this test piece, in order to iron out the paint colors and schemes that I wanted to use. It turned out well so I entered it in the Chicago Golden Demons, thinking it might make first cut. It did make first cut in a pretty deep Fantasy Singles category, I think the free-hand took as much time to paint as the entire figure did, but I was pretty happy with it considering how small it is. More on the bloodletters later, as to the many changes I made on them model wise:

I played around with the basing for the blood pools a bit, experimenting with various varnishes and clears, using a dead flat clear that I hit the models with normally from Krylon, using satin clears from Vallejo and Golden, gloss clears from Vallejo and Liquitex, and then satin and gloss poly-urethanes from Minwax. In the end I settled on the polyurethane from Minwax to get a sense of depth. I've heard various people say they don't like that, but it certainly does add a depth to the pools, compared to the other finishes that I tried. I think they mostly object to the glossiness, but I think that helps get across the wet feeling of flowing blood.

The reds if anyone is interested are based over a black primer, then using Vallejo Model Color Hull Red for the base, GW Scab Red, Reaper Master Series Blood Red Triad, and then mixing a bit of a bone white with the RMS Blood Red to get a redish pink highlight. I'm particularly pleased also with the way all of the armor plating turned out which you can see in the test piece for the army.

The other thing to note is, this is an extremely dark army, I always struggle painting armies red because if you add white to the highlights they become pink, and yellows and oranges make the reds become more orange. So I made a conscious effort to really control those highlights and tried to play with the overall depth of the darker reds. I think it worked, and it certainly helped displaying the army under the brightest lights in the hall so it didn't disappear. Everything is much darker when you see it in person.

More to follow soon. Next up: Bloodletters/Fleshhounds.

That's really good. Any advice on painting banners?

The proper core in the Khorne Legion is at least three units of bloodletters. The new plastic models are nice in my opinion, but very limited in poses. I quickly tired of the hunch-back look of them. I also thought they were too naked. I needed more variety out of the poses to keep from boredom when I move from modeling to painting. I also knew full well that ranking all of them would be a pain. I rather liked the previous edition metal ones. So what I went for in look was sort of a common ground between those metal ones and the new plastics, incorporating some of the elements that appealed to me, such as the trophies, girdles, pieces of armor, tabards, and chainmail. I also needed to fix that hunched over look. To do that, I cut the torsos of minis at the waist line, stood them up straighter by pinning the two pieces back together and then resculpted the midsection putting the abdominal muscles back in. It took time, but I knew that it would help distinguish the units a bit and make them more interesting to look at. Here are a couple WIP photos to show where I was going with the torso mods:

Here is a finished individual photo with the torso mods:

It's been a long time since I have posted on Dakka, didn't realize just how long, then I received the machinegod reminder. Anyways......

What I like to do on banners typically is paint the banner as if there is nothing on it first, up to your brightest highlight. Then for the freehand, I block in the item you are going to paint with the darkest shadow color of the item to be painted, sort gives you a fake blackline, more of shadow, and an outline of what you are painting to get the position and proportion right. Then brighten it up painting the actual item. It does take a bit of practice. I always sketch the items on paper to work everything out ahead of time. Helps to know how to draw on really complex stuff.

@ZamboniKnight: I'll have pics of him probably this week or next, I do have WIP shots of him also on my forum archive, linked in my signature. Pretty much replaced all of the old ugly skulls / heads, gave him a neck, fixed his constipation by repositioning the legs, got rid of all of the ugly old icons, and lots more tweaks.

I also knew that to make gaming easier with these guys, movement trays were a necessity so the basing theme got carried to them also. I went with the obscenely huge trays to keep the opponents from getting jabbed really bad. The following are pics of the ranked units, three core strong:

Fleshhounds: I must say I thoroughly hate the new flesh-hou....eerrrr lizards, so I used the previous edition buck-tooth ones, with some slight modifications. I did add some hair to them and twist the necks. My thoughts on the paint were to give them a bit of striations in the flesh tones, hence the striping that you see in the ultra-magnified pics.

Thanks. I really had a lot of fun with that. The more I did of that the crazier it got, to the point I had the hands dragging all sorts of things under.

I'd love to see what you could do with the new plastic Warhounds to make Flesh Hounds.

Very nice red paintjob. Seeing as it is Khorne red is very important

Like most Khorne armies it will likely crush your opponents mercilessly, but it will look good doing it, lol

Im sure it looks amazing as an army, but some of the details I think let it down a little. The eyes firstly, they seem very human. White with black pupils. Maybe Just pure White would have been more appropriate, or a slit pupil rather than a round one. Also the highlights, not blended well enough for my liking... Again im sure it looks amazing far away and people say its not about getting individual models to GD standard etc. I don't really buy into that approach however, call me a perfectionist.

uber asskickin'. I like all the minor costomizations, like the hands and the skulls n' stuff. This is the way khorne daemons are supposed to look.

... because that totally makes sense.

Amazingly deep reds, as you said not orange nor pink but red. The banner bearer is really good as is the standard of painting/ converting on the core troopers.

The flesh hounds look decent, which is more than I expected to be possible with those awful figs.

The bases really crown the army, the whole is so well though out. Amazing work.

Understandable on the eyes, I debated that also while doing it. As to painting rank and file to Golden Demon Standards. You could do that, most GD units will be in the neighborhood of 120 to 200+ hours of paint alone. These units aren't even close to that in time spent, but if you want to get an army done for play, I don't know many that can spend that kind of time on each unit. Even the standard bearer is not painted with a lot of time spent. One of my observations, from having seen many pieces painted to Golden Demon standards, is that they don't really look good in game on the Tables. The tables in most places are extremely poorly lighted, so all that time spent doing really really subtle blending gets lost on the table in the poor light. I would love to paint all my models to an extremely high standard, but I know it will not look good in the poor light, it will look muddy and dark disappearing on the table unless I painted like Bobby Wong use to(which I actually like that style too). I try to get a happy medium, where people only need to be 3 feet away and realize that its a well done army even in poor light. I've seen lots of pieces done by Victor Hardy and Chris Borer in person. I love their work, its exceptionally good, but as good as it is it won't look good in most gaming applications, unless your head is right on the table with the good light. Just so you know my personal gaming table is lit up like jewelry store, I like lots of light. Its a matter of philosphy. Can I paint better, you bet. Is it worth the time spent, I'm not sure. I know where you are coming from though.

Next Update: Herald #1

I knew early on that I was going to build a whole bunch of blood crushers and 3 jugger mounted heralds, one of which would be Skulltaker. To do this I was going to need to distinguish the Heralds from not only each other but from the bloodcrushers. For this one I rotated the left front leg forward, repositioned the front hoof, and rotated the head and neck of the jugger. On the model the GW herald just has bracers on the fore-arms, so for the armor of Khorne I added the shoulder and thigh armor to the model.
