I'm not sure if I'm reading my codex correctly, in light of the way 5th edition works. But can an Elite Inquisitor who joins another Inquisitor with retinue benefit from the henchmen? From the language I can see, it looks like he would benefit from the advantages of the Acolytes, the first Sage, and the first Chiurgeon. Everything else only applies to the Inquisitor who actually has the henchmen in his /retinue/. Is this correct?

I don't have my book with me. Does an Elite Inquisitor even HAVE the "Independent Character" special rule? If he doesn't, then he can't even join that squad.
That being said, though, It looks like the answer would be "no," anyway. The retinue works for the Inquisitor it was bought for and no other.

Why would you take both? Just take the Elite and be done.

Because you can then attach an inquisitor to a unit with a sage or warrior & get the +1BS or +1WS
Two INQ with Psycannons in one unit with a plasma cannon, two sages, and two mystics is a little scarry for me.

Yes, he does.
As for the original question, the henchmen rules all refer to the inquisitor gaining the benefits from henchmen in his retinue. If an Elite Inquisitor joins another Inquisitor's retinue, it's not his retinue... it's just a retinue that he has joined.

For most henchmen, it does indeed say 'in his retinue'. Some however, do not. Chirurgeon states "If accompanied by a chirurgeon...". Does this mean that an IC inquisitor who joins a unit of Inquisitor & Retinue can benefit from the Chirurgeon? Or indeed, multiple Inquisitors? In theory, you could have four inquisitors, all ignoring the first wound they take each turn. The sage, btw has similar wording. One of my buddies insists that this is not only possible, but smart to do, creating a 'super' inquisitorial group armed with psycannons and highly resistant to incoming fire.
