Okay so I'm a firm believer in the suicide drop units, but with the new KP BS I'm starting to wonder if that is such a good idea.
I'm thinking of giving them just lascannons and using them as another heavy weapon platform.
So my question is this, are you allowed to heavy weapon teams in one command squad or two?
Any feedback about this topic would be useful.
Thanks

well it will certainly get your KP's down, because of all the points you'll be wasting in 5 man, 2 KP bullet magnets.
now the problem with lascannon comand squads is that they're very easy to kill.
you can get away with mortars and hiding, anything else is just guarenteeing your LD bubble gets shot away ASAP

I don't use them for LD. I run a Senior Officer with a master vox for LD. I hide him in the back behind my tanks and he protects them from deep strikers with melta guns and such.

What he means is he doesn't use the free Leadership Radii but instead spends a whole stack of points on Voxes to get the exact same benefit that he could get for free.
He then arms his Command Squads to protect against Deep Striking units that are coming after his tanks.

Ya H.B.M.C has got it pretty much right.
I use voxes because i usually play with my army pretty spread out and I only run 2 platoons each with 5 squads in each and the LD bubble can't cover them all.
Even then i usually drop the platoon command with 4 meltas so they aren't much use for LD. I was just thinking about a different use for the platoon command because they offer up 2 easy KPs.
edit: I don't arm the officers with any special equipment. They just tie up the deep striking unit for a turn or two while I get something to deal with it.

There are really only three viable ways to use them - fully offensively and fully defensively. You've used them offensively. The defensive layout would indeed be a mortar and nothing else.
Having said that, there is Option 3: defensively/reaction force with lots of special weapons, perhaps a power sword. It's defense for the first few turns and offense/reaction when someone closes the distance.

Hold on Salt, wait a sec...
You take two 55-man platoons and somehow you're spread out? Are you playing in 8X2 deployment zones devoid of terrain?
Your DZ's must be packed! Keeping one guy from each squad within a 24" diametre circle of any one of your three Officers should not be hard at all.

But if I'm using the suicide command's then i won't have them for LD that's my point in this whole thing!
Its not 24' it's 12. And it's pretty much impossible to keep 100 guardsmen within 12' of one officer without them getting blown to by blast wepons.

Then you should take more platoons.

I said diametre, not radius. It's 24" across from one side to the other. That's a huge area. Actually I'm wrong. It's not 24". It's 25". There's 1" for the Officer's base, so 12"<-----base---->12".
Sgt. Salt wrote:And it's pretty much impossible to keep 100 guardsmen within 12' of one officer without them getting blown to by blast wepons.
That's what redundancy is for. You're not trying to keep 100 Guardsmen within 12" of your CHQ are you? As in, your actual army Commander?

The reason that I'm taking less platoons is because of the KP thing
I'm just trying to think of ways to get around giving up 2 KPs in a 5 man unit

No way around it. KP's are broken for Guard. The new Codex is coming soon, and that (should) fix that. In any case, the Kill Point thing isn't going to get better by taking less platoons. Guard are still pretty much hosed when it comes to KP, as a 76 point squad of Guardsmen is worth the same as a 400 point squad of Chosen Terminators in Jervis Edition 40K, so stop worrying about it, don't fight when you can't change, and make your army better.
Besides, you should be hiding these units behind solid walls and lines of infantry. They don't need to be at the front and they should be hiding.

As a rule of thumb on a 6x4 table three command squads (two platoon and one company) should cover the entire width of the board edge to edge. There will be gaps in coverage but your line should be complete.
Four gives you better gap coverage, five or more is a waste bacause of KP command squad costs and because platoon size is scalable.
I have no faith for offensive suicide command squads, especial weapon squads do the same job with less KP angst and can include the nasty demo charge.
Command squads hold the line.

I do hide them. I'm just wondering about using them as a heavy weapon platform as well as LD.
That was what the original question was about.

Giving then a HW means that you have to put them within LOS of the enemy. Putting them within LOS of the makes them into a tasty multiple KP snack. Not worth the risk. Put the guns in squads that are larger and worth less.
Guard Command units hide. That's all they do.
