And on a lighter note, some news on the progression of global warming:

blankets ? Really ? .. err nope. Bit nasty in parts of the sticks but not really a "blanket of snow over the capital".

I must confess I've no idea what % of Uk people think what about the cause of global warming, most recent thing I could find was from July here and it doesn't really go into details over the cause.

I am sure that most people think this is being hijacked by the government and used as an excuse to raise more monies.

.... you do realise that whilst global warming is supposed to cause higher average temperatures it also causes wild swings and snaps resulting in extreme weatehr patterns. Like sudden cold snaps.

I live 30 miles outside London, and sure, there is a nip in the air but it's not snowed here. Yet.

Global Warming is a misnomer. Climate Change is the more appropriate monicker. But don't worry, I'm sure you'll take it seriously one day. Like when the oil has run out and your starving, as once arable land is no longer fruitful.

There was several inches in a number of places.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

No, you can't draw conclusions from one season of climate data, or even 10 seasons, about long term climate change. In fact, the lack of accurate measurements of climate data from more than, say, a century or two ago is the cause of a lot of uncertainty and disagreement about climate. That works on both sides of that argument by the way.

The fact is that the majority of scientific opinion is that there has been a rise in mean global temperature over the last couple of centuries, and that there is probably an anthropogenic component intensifying what would be an upward trend anyhow. The question is how much is anthropogenic and what can be done about it.

Just as a point of sheer interest....

Apparently, we humans, in terms of mass, give off more energy than the Sun. Ergo, is it not possible (not necesarily feasible) that our sheer numbers, regardless of whether we drive or not etc, are affecting things?

Not trying to make a point, just asking a question I've been pondering for a while.

I'm not a climatologist, but I'm skeptical of that one. Also, I'm not sure what that means, I'm presuming that means what energy reaches the earth. I'm not going to believe that all the humans, or for that matter all warm blooded creatures on this planet, radiate more power, meaning energy per unit time, than the sun.

My understanding is that it is a matter of heat being reflected back and not escaping to space, combined with lowered albedo from melting polar ice, which is the problem.

I'm not sure if we know 100% what is causing this.

Could be entirely natural (our predictions and knowledge are based on deepcore Ice Samples. If it ever got hot enough, wouldn't be any ice, hence they would be unable to say owt). The Sun is also thought to be having a period of Hyperactivity. Or perhaps it is CFCs and that. I don't know. The above are just theories I've heard, and I don't know anywhere near enough to make any sort of claim as to which is accurate, which is twaddle etc.

But apparently, we do indeed emit more Energy, pound for pound, than the Sun. Of course, it's several Trillion times (if not more) larger in Mass, and I daresay that the bigger it gets, the more energy and so on. Just repeating what I've heard!

Oh, I missed the per pound part...that is more believable

Yarr!

Still, if we could get a) enough humans b) a really good pair of oven mitts and c) enough Superglue, we could make one hell of a Cosmic Bowling Ball!
