Yes they're bringing out a big scale rules system. You'll have a movement tray for figures, and minor heroes will be on the base and lead the regiment (eg. Sharku leading warg riders), major heroes will be able to move around by themselves

With regard to the plastics...considering they are once piece kits, I thought GW did really well to shoehorn in 12 seperate sculpts for each kit. Ergo, when you procure a box of 24 Warriors, you only get two of each.
Compared to the old days of plastic, this is quite a step forward without going to multipart.
And on Topic (sorry!) I've heard rumours of larger scale battles coming our way too. Who knows, perhaps I'll pick up LotR then?

As I recall, LOTR was and may still be something of a cash cow for GW so a new large scale release would generate a nice stream of revenue as it entails larger numbers of models.

I think it's more to do with the natural escalation of gamers collections, and the limitations of rules.
After all, if I have a large LotR collection, I might want to use it. Moving everyone individually means very large games quickl bog themselves down in mechanics. But add in movement trays, and rules for moving as a regiment (ala Warhammer as an example, not a rumour!) and things pick up pace again.

I'm guessing it might be similar to warmaster where you don't roll for every individual model, which would speed things up

Rumour has it that there will be accompanying movement trays with circular slots.
I'm pretty sure another company currently sells them (GF9 I think) already, so they are feasible.

Actually GW used to sell such things long ago.

If they do this, I might actually start playing it. The thing I really hated about the rules they have now is that close combat is the same as for 2nd ed. WH40K, which most people switched for WFB close combat rules by their second or third battle.

The general idea behind LOTR was to get bigger and bigger battles going. If you look at the progression of the sets, Fellowship, Two Towers, and ROTK, the battles get a little bigger every time. This is just the next step.

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity...... |

May get into LotR again if they go the way of Mass Combat. Was hoping for something along the lines of WFB when it first came out, but that was quashed. Battle of 5 Armies didn't last long, and I have a ton of plastic sets just waiting to be broken open and hit the tabletop.

I think this is a really positive step. I like LotR at about 300 points, but it gets tedious past there - so I have lots of little forces. This would be a good impetus to paint up some proper armies.
