Well lets see..the Dems want to cut 25% of the Mil Budget....there goes BAH...BAS...there will be cuts in manpower end strength....8 years under Clinton I could almost grin and bear it...this may turn out to be an entirely different matter.
The only upside is that they may offer early retirement for guys like me (I owe 23)...I've done my part and I think I'll take it....I don't want to see what this "test of his character/mettle" will be.

Well so much for bringing jobs back to the U.S. All the Large and Semi-Large companies will be bailing out so they won't be paying everybody else's taxes. Which just leaves the Smaller companies to float the bill. Hope your FLGS isn't the largest in town.

Corporations aren't going to bail. Their taxes aren't going to go up significantly. At least not with respect to the developed world. You'll see a culling of small businesses run by people who are too stupid/selfish/paranoid to understand s-corps and incorporation, but that will be beneficial in the long run.
But yea, it feels like a giant weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

This thread shouldn't be a policy debate, we have many other threads about those disagreements. This is about recognition of a person succeeding in completing the most grueling job application in the US.
It isn't just about the a specific individual, but about the process of national election and the non-violent handing over of power. I heard a lot Republicans say this about Bush when bashed, so I hope that it holds both ways, that one should respect the office if not the man.
I also want to congratulate McCain for his hard work as well. In any election there will be a winner and a loser. He may have lost this election, but he is a good man who has done a lot for this country.
If you want to talk about Obama and Military, please start another thread. I would be curious to see what is said, but not here.

Ok...Ahtman has a point...(the wife didn't hide the alcohol quick enough)...I will CONGRATULATE Obama on his historic election. He ran a great campaign and probably changed the face of Presidential politics in the US for the forseeable future.
There was something said tonight on Fox....Obama is the first true 21st Century Pres for the US. He is also a non-baby boomer...so I want to say America voted for who they wanted. I hope that half the things he promised can come true without that much of a downside.

Obama’s win is historic for all the obvious reasons, and it’s also a pretty good sign given the kind of campaign he ran. He built his campaign around building a ground campaign full of enthusiastic volunteers, he raised and debated policy, he campaigned based on new policies and proposed new directions. Whether or not you agree with his policies, you’ve gotta admit it was good to have one guy campaign on substance and not ‘that other guy is evil’, and win.
One other thing, I’ve been flogging fivethirtyeight here for a while, so I figure I might as well give them one last plug. They called each and every state correctly, with the possible exception of NC (which is still too close to call). They look like getting the margin right (as more CA votes are coming in the winning margin is probably going to drift out to 6%).

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

My perspective is British and I see parallels with Tony Blair's landslide in 1997.
The Tories had managed to make themselves extremely unpopular thanks to taking things too far, a string of corruption scandals, and so on. The Blair victory was to a great degree a protest vote against the Tories.
The Obama victory today is certainly strongly influenced by a sense that the Republicans messed up very badly over the past 8 years.
In the UK, the early hope of New Labour was gradually betrayed. Financial deregulation continued. The House of Lords reform was fudged. We got into unpopular and unsuccessful wars in the Middle East, and while the economy seemed to be booming it was a false boom that ended with the Credit Crunch.
I really hope that the Obama presidency does not fizzle out the same way. At least he is starting from a position of having fairly obvious problems to sort out. And Good Luck to him. What affects the USA affects the rest of the world too.

As much as I am not a fan of either of the two major parties or any presidential candidate either of them have put forward in the last 5 elections, I do wish President-Elect Obama well in his position.
While there are many of Obama's policies that he has expressed that I do not agree with, I do not want him to end up being as much of a failure as a president as history seems to be showing that the current President has been.
To make an American football comparison, when my team, the Falcons, selected Matt Ryan as their new quarterback, I was afraid that he was the wrong choice, but I desperately hoped that I was wrong and Ryan would go on to be great for the team. I feel the same way about the Obama election.

Seems to be the only reason to me, but thats coming from a state thats 'da poor boy on the block' anyway. Not near the turmoil around here that the rest of the country has seen. Not yet anyway.
What I find entertaining is that when Clinton was president he had his one little thing with a cigar and ....you know... and there was talk for months about impeaching his perverted tail. On the other hand, everyone in the country is in an uproar about Pres. Bush running the country in the ground (he didn't start it, but didn't help either) and there has been nothing about running him out of office. Seems to me the 'Dim'ocrats only kept him around to help their chances in this election. The 'Pub'lican therefore lost big time.
Didn't vote for Obama (and I am a Dimocrat), but I do hope for the best for the country. I do not think things will get better with Democrats controlling EVERYTHING, which is typically not a good thing, but who knows. I do know that B.O. has a rough row to hoe in any case (that is if Pelosi actually lets him do anything). Guess we will have to wait 70 or so days to find out though.
