i realize the only way to know this for sure is to wait but it never hurts to speculate...

what would be the set up for the new stegadon? alone all is well i figure. but with all of these characters mounted in Stegadons now, and the potential for the Slann in Stegadon special character, what does this mean for temple gaurd fromations? do yuo think that the Temple Gaurd will be allowed to for seprate units? the movement for the Steggy would get reduced but it could still have impact hits were it to be in the front. even so, could there be an option to rank up the Temple Gaurd around the Stegadon? THAT would be kool, imho.

assuming they keep the base size the same-ish:

V= Temple Gaurd
S= some piece of the Stegadon

slightly defeats the purpose of haveing the Stegdon there other than to look sweet.

I don't think being in a unit would do anything useful. You can't get a look out sir roll because your unit strength is so high and a stegadon already causes terror and is stubborn.

Characters mounted on monsters cannot join units absent a special rule.

??? jmurph are you saying that a character mounted on a monstrous mount cannot join a unit? If so please show me where that is stated.

The only restrictions for mounted characters joining units are those on a flying mount or in a chariot (which can only join units of chariots).

If what I have heard is true then you could have 10 (yes ten) Steggadons in a 2000 point army.

Why are you worried what unit they are in?

i made the assumption there would be a rule making this a plausible idea. it would allow for a silly looking but ridiculous unit that could be very killy.

and if i understand correctly, since regular stegadons are special and the ancient are rare.... at 2k points, that could be six, points allowing, seven if you take a hero in one, or the slann mounted on the stegadon. even so, assuming the points value for the regualr stegadon stays the same (just for the sake of argument) it would be 940 points. almot half of a 2k army.

fun/sweet awesome? yes, who wouldnt love a steggy horde?!
totally plausible? maybe, i have doubts tho.

That's 10 if every hero is mounted in one(assuming they don't take a second hero slot, which is unlikely).

Seven steggies plus 1000 pts of skinks/kroxies/sallies sounds pretty nasty to me.

So all I need is $400-500 in Stegadons to make a 2k army(I've got hundreds of Bow armed Skinks). Sweet!

So if you take 3 heroes on Steggies (S) and put them in one unit of Temple Guard (T), here's what you get:

SS SS SS
T T T T T
T T T T T

That's five ranks (steggies take up three, if I remember correctly) plus a boatload of impact hits plus the character attacks plus NO ATTACKS AGAINST THE TEMPLE GUARD! That starts at CR5 +3X impact hits + 3x Character attacks + 3x Steggie attacks = win. Lots of points - but who cares? Point it at the VC Count's unit, etc. Plus the unit causes terror...

That would be incorrect as you need 5 MODELS in each rank not 5 spaces taken up by models. So for you to do that properly you would need to rank them up like so

TSSSSSST
TSSSSSST
TSSSSSST
T.T.T.T.T

To get full rank bonuses

All these stegadons have me thinking Carthage.

Something sweet like a Lustrian invasion of Tileia(sp) to reclaim stolen artifacts.

Negativemoney - that is incorrect. Characters on large mounts will take up multiple spots - so, the Khorne Herald on a Juggernaut does not require a six-wide unit; the Slaan base counts as two across in each row it is in; the Dwarf lord on Shield does not require a six-wide unit, etc.

Now if it were a unit of only steggies, then yes, I agree with you - you would need five across to get a rank.

Antonin: That was true in 6th as per the Warhammer Chronicles diagram. We don't know if that applies in 7th. :-/

The rules in the BRB states that rank bonus is counted by the number of models in each rank not the number of spaces in each rank that are taken up. The old Chronicles rules that were released in 6th edition are no longer valid. The Slaan has a special rule stating how he can go into a unit and how the ranks are calculated for that model.

As for the Khorne herald on a Jugg the unit still needs to be 5 models wide rather than 4 as you have said. Remember that it counts models not frontage length divided by the base size of the RNF of the unit.
