After a prolonged game of DoW, I have finally decided to paint my marines as Salamanders. So far I have gotten only one painted and would like your C&C. I'll post more of my units as I finish them (only 2460 more points to go....).

Looks like a good, clean, solid start. For a simple tabletop gaming army, this is a where you should be going, but for a little extra visual punch, adding some shading and highlighting will do wonders.

For that, mix some Thraka Green wash and some Badab Black wash together and go over all the green armor areas. This will help define your model some more. You can then highlight a bit more with your original armor color you've used, and then bring the edges forward a bit more with a bit lighter green. It will darken your overall scheme a bit, but they will be more visually interesting with the contrast of the washes.

What he said. IMO, the entire figure could have been hit with a wash thinned with glaze medium to give the recessed areas a little more definition

A quick drybrush of grey on that base will bring out some detail as well. Keep up the good work.

It may look a little brighter because of the flash.

Not bad, i agree with previous comments, and would just like to add a question?

His shoulder Shield...is something going in the middle of the four black lines?

My eye keeps being drawn to it, but it feels a little unfinished....but overall, nice start.

PS, Feel your pain on the thousands of points to paint!!!

delvin mud or barad black wash would be great for these guys, and maybe a dark green in the recesses. but good so far ^^

Love the look of this guy, also I second Jediraptor on the shield, maybe add something else to it, like another salamander symbol if you could free hand that or if you have an Imperial Guard Transfer sheet use one of the skulls on it. I know a lot of people don't like skulls on everything but I don't think it would be a problem.

Originally I had planned on making a heraldry symbol, but then I did a facepalm and said to myself "They're Salamanders! There must be more fire!" So now I'm going to have the shields be black with fire in the middle.

I agree with the guys above, a little shading and highlighting would go a long way to finish what I see as a good job. On a side note, a little nit-picky I know, you could do with tidying up the edges of the helmet lenses a little, and there's a grey patch on one of the hip plates in pic 1.

Sort them, and the highlighting, and you're on to a winner IMO.

Like the black shield and flame idea, perhaps you can use that with your heraldry idea for characters and squad leaders, keeping the basic black and flame for the squad members.

Learning that I cannot freehand worth a damn, I think I'm going to just take the tactical, assault, and devastator arrows and paint them in flame colors (salamanders are a Codex chapter after all). These are undoubtedly easier to freehand than regular fire, but I'd rather paint over transfers. Can I paint over transfers, or will they just come off when I paint them? If that doesn't work, I thought i could just use the transfer as a kind of stencil, painting a dark gray around it to get the shape, and then painting over that gray when done.

I will also be posting more pics of the finished terminator (aside from the fire).

Fixed. Two coats of paint always helps....

Good solid start, looking good. Needs some depth to really pop though (looking forward to the new pics)

Can I paint over transfers, or will they just come off when I paint them?

I've painted over the salamander head and other decals with orange (for 3rd company) with no problems. Sealing the model should ensure none of the paint comes off.

If you still wanna takle flames, get a pic of a flame icon and practice painting it a bunch of times. You'll eventually get a feel for a quick couple of strokes that work well. Mine are not perfect but are ok -- and that is what I did. If you do go the arrow route, Salamanders used to use yellow symbols at one time.

Also as a tip, you can flip the Salamander head so it points forward on terminators pads. I flip it in the water that it is released in and coax it back onto the paper then proceed as usual.

Well, I tried freehanding the flames again, and it turns out I'm not so bad after all. Here are the new pics and, as always, C&C are welcomed. I also forgot to drybrush the middle of the base (DURR), but when I look at it, it looks somewhat like a shadow.
