I'm tired of being a goody-two-shoes Space Marine player, I've decided to go Chaos.
The only problem is I have no idea what "legion" to collect, I am a confident painter and was thinking of going Alpha Legion, Emperors Children or Black Legion (To keep things simple)
Now, I don't know if this is the right board to be asking this, and if it's not feel free to move it, mods.
Anyway, I was hoping, if anyone collected either of these armies I would love to see completed examples as I am in desperate need of inspiration

If you go Black Legion, you can still add Nurgle Marines etc in and paint part of them a dif color so they stand out yet still feel like part of the force.

Well, alpha legion is pretty cool looking, what with the scales and all. EC are awesome for a themed army. But with Black legion, you can field all the cult troops.

Id love to see some really well painted Alpha legion though...

AFAIK there is no benefit or restriction when taking a 'legion' given the new Chaos SM codex. I have Word Bearers and I hate the new codex but the army is still nice and strong.

Typically WB were the only legion to take any kind of Demon unit and had their own Dark Apostles which were akin to Chaplains. You probably know that of course.

All I'm really trying to say is that one Chaos army really is no different from any other now, except for the paint job.

From a gaming standpoint, fluffy Alpha Legion would be the hardest to play, as their army would be the most restrictive.
From a painting standpoint I think thet the Alpha Legion look really cool, and would definately be something that you don't see as much.
Black Legion is always a little boring, and Emperor's Children too often becomes "omg daul lash is graet!"

Arrgh, I hate Lash so much... I played another CSM army last night and my opponent was using dual lash. Lash sucks the arse.

It's actually one of the better psychic powers out there. It doesn't suck at all. I guess you should stay far away from EC. Wouldn't want to take a Lash, far too cheesy with an EC army.

There's a lot of debate about Alpha Legion fluff in this regard; some view the precepts of 'anything goes' as being much more AL than even Black Legion, and even the use of vanilla SM as corrupted by AL for their purposes.

Out of those three choices, I'd definetly have to go with The Emperor's Children. They have some pretty awesome conversion opportunities (You should seriously see the Defiler I've been working on. Perhaps the most debaucherous thing in all of Warhammer), especially if you have an "active" imagination. They don't have to be a pastel pink, either. My Emperor's Children are a very Chaotic, "dirty" pink/purple, with black veins running through it. Noise marines absolutely massacre on the battlefield, and a Daemon Prince with Lash Whips is incredible.

Black Legion is nice, though, because it allows you to use any special troops (Plague Marines, Thousand Sons, Noise Marines, Berserkers) in your army. It's still really generic, though.

Ok you are all wrong (just kidding its preference really). You forget the Thousand Sons, Sorcerer Saergants, a 4+ invulnerable save, and AP 3 bolt weapons plus all the other standard gear for CSM. The only down side is a crap-load of points per marine though. All your choices are ok from my standpoint, but i think thousand sons are the way to go.

i guess as far as painting goes doing some EC would be pretty neat. they are so bright and colorful, i mean black and pink? thats awesome. personally ive always liked the look of a good EC painted army

YA! let the corruption overpower you my friend. I assume Im to late to help you in ur choice of army or God, but it dosent matter. Just collect Chaos.

My only army is a CSM Night Lords, and I've never regreated it. Whichever legion you go with the models will still be sweet.

I always thought that fluff wise that night lords would go best with EC, cause in the end Night Lords are just slavers, pirates and all around murdering theives. So a band of EC would be at home.

Depends if you are looking at appearance or effectiveness.

The effective build now is 2 Lash Dps, 9 Oblits and plague marines. So much for variety.

I love my EC and have a mix of purple and gold and black and pink. They look great. But they are no plague marines on the table. So, I did up some gross PMs to beat face with. Likewise, I have some spiffy painted preds with extensive weathering. They are no Oblits on the table. So, I picked up oblits and used the BL scheme. I used to use a choppy lord, but since that is now pretty crap, I converted a winged sister celestine and the deceiver into DPs. They get to keep their Slaanesh colors, though :-)

You said you were a regular SM player right? Do you play your own custome chapter? Cause you could always go off there colors and say they went to chaos.. you could get a whole backstory thing going.. and then you could just use the rules for chaos and do alittle converting...
