Just got back from the Baltimore GT (awesome weekend) and have a question about the Herald of Khorne I'm hoping a Daemon player can help me out with.

Is there a way that a charging Herald of Khorne on a chariot can get Str 8 attacks? I got hit with this in my last game which wiped out a unit of Obliterators due to the Instant Death rule but I'm having trouble finding how to get the Heralds above Str 7. My opponent was adamant they were Str 8 and I didn't question it at the time, assuming he knew his codex enough to be right but now I've had a chance to look through the codex I can't see how that's possible.

Str 5 to start, Furioius Charge +1, Unholy Might +1, chariot +1 so yeah on the charge str 8 very nasty as the chariot makes him a beast in CC

Kind of odd that he didn't just list off the things that made him strength 8 though.

The Herald only has Str 4 to start with. This is whats confusing me. The entry for the chariot gives the profile of the Herald which says its Str 5 with the chariot bonus included.

Is there something else I'm missing?

there is absolutley NO way a herald can have str 8. the previous poster is incorrect.
the heralds start with strength 4. +1 for chariot + 1 for unholy might. +1 for furious charge, best you can get is 7 str.

I can't think of any way to get strength 8, but the herald's attacks would still have caused instant death from the Hellblade being a power weapon.

Power weapons do not cause instant death. In the case above, at best, he'd've been able to cause instant death to T3 models and would ignore armor saves in close combat.

Never fear asking your opponent to see his army list. If they tell you no, or won't clarify something for you, then they only have something to hide.

Looking at an opponents list doesn't always help if there are no stats on it

I saw no reason to question my opponent as he'd previously got a gaming award at the Vegas GT this year with the same army so figured he knew his codex well enough. If he'd made an honest mistake it was unfortunately for me a huge one. It was the difference between killing a squad of 2 Obliterators in one round versus killing just one, which would have given me the chance to swing back and perhaps put some hurt on it. Even had the Oblit missed, it wouldn't have given up a kill point until the following turn which turned out to be the last, and I would have scored a tie and not a minor loss. C'est la vie, I guess.

I was indeed claiming, incorrectly, that power weapons cause instant death. I was trying to figure out if something else had caused the instant death but stopped before remembering the difference between a power weapon and a power fist.

Power Fists don't cause instant Death either, solkan.

Well not in all cases anyway. They only cause ID on a model that it doubles it toughness on. For Marines they usually have a Str 8 so that anyone Toughness 4 or less is killed due to double toughness. However models like Guardsmen and Striking Scorpions only have Str 6 with a Power Fist and therefore only ID models with a toughness of 3 or less.

I would suggest to re-read the rules for weapons and then also the ID rule to be totally clear on what causes it.

As for the Herald, was this the Skulltaker or a normal Khorne Herald? At least with the Skulltaker, he causes ID on a 4+ reguardless of toughness.

No, this was a regular Herald.

skulltaker is the only way you can get rending that causes instant death on a 4+

Well if he specifaclly said strength 8 he is wrong, but if he added Fury of Khorne it would give him Rending.
