Subject: Demolisher vs Chimera

In a Chimera heavy list (say ... 6 Chimeras) I have two Bassies and 6 to 8 Sentinels. There might be a couple Rhinos mixed in with Chimeras. The question is, with all the AV 10 and AV12 should I take a couple more Chimeras (or maybe even a Medusa) or else take the Demolisher, coming in at ~200 points. It is for a siege army, not necessarily City Fight.

I've really never heard of using Chimeras as tanks. I'm not awake enough to figure out if it's practical or not. Can someone H.B.M.C this idea for me?

Well, the demolisher does what chimeras can't: hurt Armor and good saves. More Chimeras will help, but if you're taking any vehicles in a guard force you should at least max your heavies, and I strongly prefer Demolishers and LRBTs over basilisks in 5th.

I think I definately want the Demolisher. I will have to play for a bit, I will be taking infantry squads and Conscripts I do not know how everything will fit on the table.

Can a dedicated transport move away from the unit it's transporting? I'm away from home and can't look it up.

yes the only thing in 5th ed that being dedicated means is that the transport can't be deployed with other squads inside,
it can even pick up other units later.

I'm curious as to why? With the indirect fire rules, cover can largely be ignored by Basilisk fire. High strength, low AP, with a crack at circumventing cover saves seems pretty tasty to me.

I'd recommend the Demolisher, as most opponents will shoot at it to the exclusion of your Chimeras.
Sentinels do not even come into the equation here, though (entirely different weapons are used to take them out).

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k. Rule #1 - BBAP

Two reasons:
1) The new scatter rules mean that anything other than a hit will scatter 2d6" rather than the highest of two d6's. It's not a huge deal, but a 7" scatter on average will miss even large units.
2) The lack of area terrain makes it far, far harder to hide the bassie effectively. That coupled with outflanking and snikrot makes the bassie far less durable than before.
To be fair, I was never the biggest fan of the bassie in 4th, so these losses really put the fork in the unit for me, and YMMV.

a 7" scatter on average will miss even large units.
Why will it scatter 7"? You subtract the shooters BS, so it will scatter four inches.
Anyway, the real problem with basilisks is the minimum range thing if you take indirect fire.

I think I am taking a Demolisher and two Medusas. A Medusa is a Chimera/ Bassie with a 36" Demolisher Cannon. The Demolisher will need a cool name.
The reason why being the argument that you simply need AP3/ AP2 shooting.
This should be a cool army, I can use the Chimeras to block line of sight to the Medusas, for example.

I like the Demolisher because of the AV13 on the sides. It is a sweet tank.

Demolishers are awesome. I won't field less than 2 if the points allow.
- AV14/13/11 is a tough nut to crack. S7 can only Glance the sides. Immune to S4 in assault.
- S10 AP2 is brutal. I've wiped an entire Nob Biker squad in one shot this way.
Chimeras are much too overpriced. Not even close to being fair in 5E.
