Hmmm. Seems like more of the same really. Blazing away at someone for several seconds before they die doesn't exactly scream brutality. They should have Company Of Heroe's example for a demonstation of RTS genius.

I really should be spending my time more constructively.

Liked the building being blown up.

Seems to be quite a bit of micromanaging.

I won't be buying it until I can send Carnifexes roaring into the enemy.

You can. Nids are the fourth confirmed race.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Okay, so it's not groundbreaking, but I liked the first one and will definately be getting this one. DoW 1 was one of the few video games that I actually finished to the end without howling in disgust.

That doesn't mean you can't use them in multiplayer/skirmish games.

That looks really dull. I liked the idea of taking out the base building, and focusing on unit tactics instead. Unfortunately from that gameplay video it didn't look like they'd really added much of a tactical element. It looked more like the old RTS games where they gave you limited troops to complete missions, where there just no skill at all in playing.

So you just move from target to target, killing one after the next, happy to leave your own guys standing around in the open, blazing away.

To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

They have boss battles now too. Notice the life bar for the Warp Spider Exarch they're fighting at the end there.

Probably the part of this that annoys me about DoWII is that isn't a sequel to DoW. It's a compeltely different style of game trading on the DoW name.

The other issue I see is that it might be a case of select all your units, click attack on one thing until it dies, and then the next, and then the next, and that every mission will be like that. Just spamfest where anything can kill anything with enough time.

That annoyed me in DoW as well, where my Heavy Bolters and Bolters would eventually bring down Predators, Land Raiders and Monoliths. On a smaller scale I can only see that problem being worse.

They need to make it brutal and unforgiving. Hate to repeat myself, but if you cocked up in COH you knew all about it. Tanks are invulnerable to small arms, but a well aimed 88 shell would nail them. It's no different in 40K. So why this dumb system? All you had to do in DOW1 was to build half a dozen predators and the win was yours. It's a very substandard franchise. Just because it contains out beloved hobby doesn't detract from the fact that it is a really cunky title, with no room for finesse, or indeed tactics.

Not true.

Tactically DoW was pretty limited, but there were a number of innovations that created an excellent strategic game. There was a real balance to be found between taking early resource points, but not over-extending yourself, in judging the number of troops you’ll need to knock out a base decisively without over-committing.

As a casual player who would occasionally play against some friends who were DoW veterans, I can tell you there was a lot of skill involved. I got thrashed time and again by people who were looking four and five moves ahead.

The problem here is that excellent strategic game has been dropped, but it doesn’t look like there’s been a sophisticated tactical game brought in instead.

You can't even build half a dozen predators. They're capped at two.

Substitute Predators for Dreadnaughts then. Same win.

Just as I thought. Marines not needing to use the cover system means this is basically squad-based Diablo 2.

Damn it, I want to see marines diving for cover from incoming shells and blind firing bolters overtop of ruined walls.

Seriously... as has been mentioned before... the thing that made COH so awesome was the realism and cover systems. You could actually create a choke point with only a pillbox, an anti-tank gun and some defensive fortifications. No amount of small arms fire would bring down a tank. Infantry was fragile when running against entrenched positions.

DOW 2 needs this or else it's going to suck hard. Hell, it's not like they don't already have the basic game engine developed... I hope they do this right... but I'm not holding my breath.
