Marmite is a black savoury spread made from the yeast byproducts of beer brewing.

British people love it (or hate it) spread thinly on hot toast.

The Australian version is called Vegemite.

Love it.

Used to eat loads of it (spread thickly) until I became hooked on chocolate spread...

The Aussie and British RAF personnel I worked with last deployment used to have a "tea" about once every week or so and invite everyone in the area to hang out and try new things. My Aussie counterpart had me try Vegimite (she was hot so I probably would have tried anything) telling me it was like a really concentrated beef bullion spread. It was...interesting...and definitely takes some getting used to. I actually didn't like it at first but after a couple tries it was okay.

I've always wanted to try it, but wouldn't know how to get it in the states. I think I would like it because from the description I imagine it has a salty "preserved" taste. Am I wrong?

I prefer it to vegemite, some Australian I am...

theres another spread called promite which is very good also (its my personal favourite of the savory spreads)

Screw marmite and vegemite, promite is the bomb right now.

You are not wrong.

Marmite (the British version) is saltier and Vegemite (Australian) is sweeter, I believe (I haven't tasted it.)

I have a 500g jar in front of me now. Ingredients: Yeast Extract, Salt, Vegetable Extract, Niacin, Thiamin, Spice Extracts (contains Celery), Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12.

Vegemite has been banned in the US as the food and drug administration only allows folate in drugs, not added to foods.

And vegemite has a bucket load of it.
So its great for drunks and pregnant women...

Vegemite is a great hangover cure, the only problem being its slightly more horrible than the hangover.

I guess Marmite is much the same, I had it when I was a kid and it seemed much the same.

i love marmite, never tried vegemite but marmite is nice, eating some right now =].

I hate marmite unless it is supplied in twiglet form - then it is ok.

Man, I've tried Marmite. It's horrid. I mean, like wow. I was impressed with how bad it was. It was like rippin off a chunck of a 10 day old body left ot rot in a sewre in the summer.

I love it. Fortunately for me, there's an import store nearby where I can get all my non-American staples:

Pickled onions, smarties, jaffa cakes, fruit pastiles, proper sausages, marmite, lime marmalade, digestives, ribena, and so on.

Pickled Onions are an import? Digestives too?

Sod Africa, we need a Live Aid for the Yanks! The poor dears clearly have no decent food.

They have no idea about good foods here. We have a chain "English Pub" called Elephant & Castle - and it's not bad - they do a good Yorkshire pudding, good cod fish&chips, but some things (pickled onion) just don't translate. They offer a 'plowman's lunch' offering without one! They do have the best selection of beers of any bar, although you cannot get a bitter over here for anything.

But, I make do. The one shop where we can get Haywards, and Branston Pickle is close enough that I'm in good shape.
