I’ve just taken up 40K after a 8 year hiatus and was wondering if I purchased the Foundation Paints box set along with the Wash box set, some brushes, Black, White and Metallic Paints would that be sufficient to produce a decent quality level of Ork model?

I only ask as I have no idea what the Foundation Paints and Wash’s are like and all my old paints are unsurprisingly dried up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Foundation paints just have a lot more pigment in them. They show up really well when you paint them on a black base coat. They are so so. I could do with or without them. The flesh color is awesome though. If your painting skin you need it. Get the washes. They are incredible.

Once upon a time, I told myself it's better to be smart than lucky. Every day, the world proves me wrong a little more.

I love the foundation paints. I prefer using them to the others, but thats because i usually paint things in a very dark color scheme. If your using white primer I dont think it will really matter. I recently bought badab black and devlan mud, I was skeptic but they seem to work very well right out of the pot... no watering at all really

Not supposed to water down the washes. It takes away from the effect.

Foundation paints and Washes are great!

Like OMU said don't water the washes they are made to be used full strength.

You'll find it a lot easier painting with Foundation paints and washes now, orks especially.

I've been rejuvenating my paints this week, some of them are 12 years old and upon wrenching the lid open I was greeted with the traditional shrivelled blob of paint.

I've added a little de-ionised water to each pot, the kind you get for topping up car batteries and steam irons, it's pretty cheap and is the best thing for thinning paints anyway. I then also added to each pot a small stone, like a marble or quartz or flint, something that's not absorbent or porous, so that I can shake the pot to hell and back to mix the paint up really thoroughly like you do with a spray can. IT's worked really well, there was a mixture of normal paints and metallics, out of eighteen pots of paint only four didn't recover instantly, and two days later only two have proved completely beyond salvation.

I've added mixing stones to all of my pots of paint now, even the new ones, after I've found that some paint I bought recently had sat so long in the shop that it had seperated out and I dislike using cocktails sticks for stirring as you seem to lose so much paint each time you stir. This way you can properly stir the paint before every use. I've also had to add the de-ionised water to some of the paints I just bought, including the foundation paints, as they had obviously sat in a hot shop too long and lost some fluid.

As has been said, don't use water to thin the washes, it doesn't work, use them neat.

I came up with the stone idea when I was thinking it would be good to have a ball bearing or something in the bottom of each paint pot to stir them up by shaking before each use, but then I thought the steel would rust and discolour the paint. I thought about stainless steel ball bearings, then realised I could never be bothered to go and find and but stainless ball bearings... then it occured to me that in amongst my basing stuff I have a little jar of hard stones I'd collected from the garden and cleaned up. The non-porous ones are the best ones to paint as well so I picked those ones anyway. Now I can shake and stir all my paints, it's great.
