Not quite familiar with 5th rules here so.....

Do drop pods dropped next to objectives be used to contest them? I remember old rules immoble ones didnt, but dont know if its different in 5th.

Hope more old fools come to their senses and start giving you their money instead of those Union Jack Blood suckers...

Yes, a drop pod can contest an objective.

Any unit that's not dead or fleeing can contest an objective in 5th.

Remember though, that it's not terribly likely to last the course. Being already Immobilised, any Immobilising hits will be Weapon Destroyed.

And I believe an immobile, weaponless vehicle counts as destroyed at the end of the game?

Nope, 'fraid not. If it's still 'alive', it's still 'alive'. It can be immobilized and have every gun blown off, but unless you can get that one more damage result to kill it, it can still contest the objective.

Fair enough.

Not played since early 4th, so I'm glad I didn't state it as fact!

Would I be right in thinking that, having lost it's Weapon, any damage relating to Guns or Movement then upgrade to destoyed from there? I'd check myself but am at work!

yes.

And the reason its not auto destroyed as you thought it might be is because some vehicles and units can restore vehicles to working order, rhinos and tech marines for example. So the vehicle is allowed to stick around until fixed or destroyed by yet another weapon destroyed, immobolised or destroyed result is placed on it.
