Okay, just started guard a couple months ago and finally about to move up to 1000 point games. Before I buy anything more, I'd like to get the list straightened out so I don't waste money. Anyway, here is what I was thinking for my 1000 point list:
Doctrines: Iron discipline, veterans, close order drill, sharpshooters (other one is variable)
HQ
Junior Officer w/ honorifica, vet w/ standard: 76 pts
Fire Support squad w/ 3 autocannons and sharpshooters: 105 pts
Elites
5 vets w/ 3 meltas: 70 pts
5 vets w/ 3 meltas: 70 pts
Troops
Platoon 1
-Junior officer, 4 flamers: 64 pts
-Squad 1 w/ autocannon, plasma: 85 pts
-Squad 2 w/ autocannon, plasma: 85 pts
-Squad 3 w/ heavy bolter : 70 pts
Platoon 2
-Junior officer, 4 flamers: 64 pts
-Squad 1 w/ heavy bolter : 70 pts
-Squad 2 w/ heavy bolter : 70 pts
Heavy Support
Leman Russ w/ 3 heavy bolters: 155 pts
Total: 984

seems pretty solid. It seems like alot of other lists I have been seeing but they seem to work well. I'm assuming your variable dotrine is generally Drop Troops so you can DS the vets, but what other docs do you use instead?

That being said, I'll still give you a 0 if you bring more than 5 eldar skimmers. Don't be that guy.
Also, strippers. |

for 15 pts more you can swap the fire support squad for an anti tank support with lascannons, and be sitting at 999. you've got the melta squads, but redundancy is good.

3 Lascannons at this level when combined with the Meltaguns is overkill. Autocannons will handle most things that appear at the 1000 points level. Anything bigger (ie. Land Raiders) can be killed by the Meltas. Umm... ok, the list. Pretty darn good for a first try. A few questions though: "Junior Officer w/ honorifica, vet w/ standard: 76 pts" Your Doctrines list Iron Discipline, so how are you getting 76 points for this unit? If you've taken Iron Discipline it should be 81 points. I'm guessing you didn't take Iron Discipline. That's fine though, you've got a few spare points, so no issue there. "-Junior officer, 4 flamers: 64 pts -Junior officer, 4 flamers: 64 pts" Ditto and ditto again. You haven't taken Iron Discipline despite selecting it as a Doctrin. That's fine, you only need 15 points to fix this and you have 16 spare, so it's really simple to fix. I'd probably un-concentrate the flamers, just to avoid putting too many eggs in one basket. Drop one from each Command Section and shove them into the HB squads in the 2nd Platoon. Last point goes to a Searchlight on the Russ. Why not? And your final Doctrine? Drop Troops. Fits with the Vets, and it gives you manoeuvrability options. And it's free!! BYE

Thanks for the comments! Oh, and I did intend to include iron discipline, I just forgot. And drop troops sounds good, I think I'll go with that one.

Ok, I did figure that the LCs were redundant. But when you say overkill, how ineffecient would they be? would three potential wounds lost hold one back against a horde or some such? Or is it that the 15 pts are better elsewhere? Not trying to pester, just looking for the whys behind the whats.

It's not about the 15 points, it's about what he gives up to take the Lascannons. Autocannons are a perfect weapon for this points level. Most people aren't going to be showing up with oodles of AV14 at 1000 points. Taking 3 Lascannons on top of the Meltas will help him kill whatever AV14 comes up, but overall he's better off with the Autocannons, weapons that can handle a wide variety of targets and aren't as compeltely mono-focused as the Lascannons are.

So the extra shot each at S7 is what counts for this size? So, rather than tanks, there would be a greater need to put wounds on heavy infantry? that would, statisticaly, improve accuracy by 58.25% over the LC. While still wounding on a 2+ right? Ok, cool! I think I got it! but would taking the LCs instead of melta squads and ACs to save points for more plain guardsmen be practical?

No. Not in the slightest.
Thanks to the way cover mechanics function with vehicles in 5th, if you're going to get through you need to kill the vehicle with that hit. So many hits will both be saved by the 4+ and then only glance and do nothing (can't kill on a Glance) that you need something that will ensure you get through.
The meltagun does this by both being almost always assured of scoring a penetrating hit (average armour penetration is 15), and as you have to be within 6" you can often bypass their cover, getting past the 50/50 save issue.
On the other hand you need 12 Lascannons firing every turn for 6 turns to destroy a single AV14 vehicle in cover. He hasn't got the time or the points for that, so the Meltagun is the better option.
The Autocannon is just a good weapon for Guard all round. It eliminates the problems with BS3 by firing two shots a turn (so you should hit 6 times in a 6 turn game if you fire for all 6 turns), it has the power to handle anything AV12 and below, and actually has the same chance to damage an AV13 vehicle as a one shot S8 Krak missile (although killing it is a different story given the Autocannon can only glance).
As far as Heavy Infantry, yes, it falls into the same category as the Multi-Laser here. It wounds on a 2+, and the more wounds you get, the more they fail.

I wish you had the time to write a full article on Imperial Tactica. It would be amazing! now to un-jack the thread...
