I have been on a bit of a quest to build a small starter IG list with which I can use to get into the game, and hopefully expand into larger matches. This is essentially for stand up combat. I, therefore, tried to fit in more vanilla troops instead of special weapons or items. I was a bit worried about combating tanks, hence I upgraded one squad to storm troopers/drop troops with meltas.
I wanted to get some use out of tanks, as well. My research shows that tanks need to be massed to be effective. I therefore went with the chimera, Leman Russ, and Basilisk. I feel I should justify the Basilisk without indirect. Aside that it would be difficult pointwise, I felt the presence of two other tanks of near value would help draw fire away from it. That, or it will draw fire and attention away from the rest of the army. Such is my theory.

Anyway, without further speech -

Smoke on a Basilisk? you move them? Try to free up some points and take indirect fire.

I'm no expert, but...

Your HQ is one point short:
JO: 40 ID: +5 vet: +6 standard: +5 = 56pts

and a bassie w/o indirect is pointless, as it will be exposed to fire. I would trade it for another chimera until you play at 1k and can afford indirect

again, I'm no expert, but that's what I can spot.

Good luck!

Basilisk with Smoke and no Indirect Fire.

Try again.

Well, I guess the basilisk must go. So, to continue demonstrating my ignorance of all things ig - here is a revised list...

I essentially replaced the basilisk with a fire support squad with bolters and distributed the points elsewhere. I tinkered with the idea of adding a chimera instead of the support squad, I figured it was best to just fit in as much firepower as possible and use the drop troops doctrine for the veterans.

well, lets see...

the command squad in your platoon is eligable for ID, so go ahead and slap that on 'im

and swap out the HB turret on the chimera for a multilaser. the HB still gives marines a save, so might as well wound on a 2+, right?

and if you take 2 H.vets out (the meltas are all that matter) your at a nice 747pts!

have fun!

Thanks! I can finally start putting together the rest of the troops.

I wanted to propose one thing that occurred to me this morning. Would it be a better choice to use autocannons in the fire support squad and give the guardsmen heavy bolters? The idea being that the support squad could focus on light armor, if the need arose, while the line squads can always target infantry.

1) I'd consider dumping the HB on the armoured fist squad since they'll be moving

2) Autocannons would IMO be the better choice for a fire support squad. It does mean more eggs in one basket though.

3) If you take the vetereans doctrine, you can make two verteran melta squads.

4) I see a distinct lack of plasma in your list. Any particular reason?

5) I feel you've gone very naked on your army. You shouldn't overdo it, but ID on your second JO wouldn't be a bad investment.

the heavy bolter doesn't matter much, but it can be fired from the chimera (but then counts as open topped, nothings free...)

the AC/HB swap is a good idea, the longer range will help from the back

two vets seems unnesicary at 750 pts. how many av13+ critters will there be at this size?
when he hits 1k, he will need two, but not quite yet I'd bet.

again, at 750, I don't think he'll need plasma either. A few good hits with the AC/HB should do just fine

and might I suggest sharpshooters on the support?

sorry for the double, PSP can't handle big edits

go ahead and drop the HB from the Armored Fist
swap the ACs to the support squad and give them sharpsooters (only them) +10 to reroll 1's on "to-hit"

you may be a few points short, so drop another man from the vet squad.

then you've got a solid list!

and have some fun, OK?

If you're spending the points on the standard bearer, you should make the bubble leadership 9.

Not strictly necessary at this points level. It's only 1000 points and he has two Officers, so he should be fine.

Oh, yes, 750, so you're right, even less necessary. In fact, the 25 points on an Honorifica means you'd have to give something up, and you don't want to do that at such a low points level.
