Anyone else have this problem as you're working on an army? While I've had this happen again and again and again in the past, this is the latest example of this happening with me:

I started reading the Gaunt's Ghosts novels a few years ago (I came late to the series, only starting the series after first reading Double Eagle in hardback) and decided that I needed to start an IG army to go along with some Imperial Navy Thunderbolts (which I wanted to be the real showcase of the army). Being inspired by Double Eagle and the Gaunt's Ghosts novels, I had planned a "Commissar Gaunt and Friends" army, with units representing Ghosts, Genswick Rifles, and Phantine Skyborne. But as I read further and further into the Ghost's series, the less I feel inspired to make an army. The novels just don't have the same feel that the earlier ones did and this is translating into my motivation to work on this army. So now, I've got a squad of Ghosts and a bunch of unassembled IG (not to mention the Wood Elf bits I also bought to make the Tanith conversions) and combined with the fact that the IG codex is in pretty bad shape in 5E as well as rumors of a new, armor-heavy IG codex coming soon, I have no motivation to build this army. While I know that I'll want to build a Guard army once the new codex comes out, it doesn't sound like the new feel would be amenable to making a fluffy Tanith First and Only army even if I wanted it to. I'm just glad I've only got 50 or so plastic Cadians - I'm eagerly waiting to see what new plastic models the new codex will bring to replace them with.

Anyone else have similar stories of losing motivation and moving on to other projects?

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack

all the time, the most recent one was i was happy painting my guard, and then i acquired a chaos army and my attention has turned to them, i'll be getting a WFB chaos army soon too, and the vicious cycle continues

It's a constant risk, only mitigated by lack of time to indulge every possible "interesting" army concept. (Though admittedly, I derive inspiration from neat-looking tactical ideas, rather than GW's story-telling.)

The good news is that I've got (nearly) every interesting tactical variant represented, from static Guard (and mobile Guard) through massed jetbikes, daemons from the sky, and stealers from the flanks. The bad news is that there are still many interesting variants to try out - other kinds of Daemons, different configurations of supportive big bugs, things that aren't Eldar riding bikes, etc.

I decided to do Cadians, and since then I've looked at a lot of other stuff and thought how cool it would be to have it as well. But if I bought it it would distract me and I'd have too much to work on so I don't buy it, I just stick with Cadians.

"This is TOO expensive." "I'm going TO the store, TO get some stuff."
"That is THEIR stuff." "THEY'RE crappy converters."
"I put it over THERE." "I'll go to the store THEN."
"He knows better THAN that." "This is NEW." "Most players KNEW that."

yeah, what you've described is probably the reason most people have several half finished armies. I know thats why I have CSM:Night Lords, Tau and Demon Hunters. The trick I found was taking all my half started armies and putting them in a box under my bed. That way I have to work on my main army (Night Lords) because there is nothing else to do. Kinda a out of sight/out of mind thing.

I had started an Alpha Legion army, before the new chaos codex.

The rest probably doesn't need to be said.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

Dammit! Just heard Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries on the radio - now I want to make a Catachan army mounted in Valks.

Good news Death! Plastic Valkyries have been confirmed so you'll get your chance! Yay for random armies!

Oh and on topic i just sold like 9 half armies for fantasy last weekend. It kills me a little inside that I have only finished painting 2 of all the fantasy armies i've ever started

Orks, Dark Eldar, Imperial Guard, WFB Chaos mortals, Tyranids. All started and abandoned. Good news, when the Eye of Terror supplement came out, I went at all of them with knives and clippers and viola, Lost and the Damned! (Used in battle twice, then abandoned again, this time by GW.... )

I am swapping between Death Guard (70+ plague marines...ouch), Renegade Guard and a small world eater's force.

Now that I have a reasonable grasp on painting, I swap between the three. Currently I'm on the death guard, then I will work on the world eaters, then on to the guard. I try to work on the armies in sections as to not get too bored and to leave something to look forward to.

A bizarre array of focusing mirrors and lenses turning my phrases into even more accurate clones of

I don't really have this problem because my Tau army has enough differences in paint schemes that it doesn't get boring.

Urban blue camo for firewarriors, gray camo for Kriegoot, stylized urban camo for tanks, and totally awesome harlequin and gundam colors for crisis suits.

The problem is getting bored of painting cuz playing volleyball is just more fun.
