It really depends on personal painting styles and what sort of effect you're after.

White generally gives a brighter result, while black tends to be better for heavy shading or a darker, grittier look.

DKoK would work with either, depending on how you paint them.

I use a black undercoat for my figs and they always turn out well, I used white once and it worked well but not as well as the black one though

Why not prime them dark grey. Give it a nice light grey drybrush, then wash with black?

I hear people at my FLGS talk about this occasionally. A black undercoat is for a darker look. If you want anything to be a bright color don't undercoat black. If you use a white undercoat sometimes it's a little harder to get full coverage because things don't blend well into the white if you miss some spots. Like in a hard to brush crevasse, it looks better if it's black but if you paint it in pieces it should be easier to get if it's white.

Once upon a time, I told myself it's better to be smart than lucky. Every day, the world proves me wrong a little more.

I always use a medium grey primer myself, especially if you are going to do a squad in grey. I find grey gives a nice balance. Niot as hard to cover with bright colours as black, and doesn't leave white spots in those hard to reach places. I've never had good luck with white primer, my models always look better on a black base coat.

Black all the way. It's far more forgiving, even if getting to lighter colours takes more layer stages.
